I would just sell it and get one of the bogen Digi series that includes a ball head for $100. If you go your way your gonna spend $400 for the Arca head plus $45 for a quick release which weighs half as much as your tripod. Then to put that on a set of cheap legs just does not make any sense. oh and you need to buy the $45 post to try to
make it all work..

the viewfinders were different between the record and the billy.
I had a Billy Record with a Solinar but sold it before replacing
the bellows and shooting it. Sure wish I had kept it now. Would
love to see a huge velvia slide from it.

Get the Canon 22-55mm USM lens. it is discontinued but can be had for $100 or less. Very similar to the 18-55 but will fit all EOS cameras,
film or digital.

Very few Electro 35 cameras work now.
I have been very lucky with Electro 35s. bought at least 12 of them in the last few years. General cleanup, clean the viewfinder, put in a new battery with a spring and some light seals and they worked fine.
I do think your battery wire is shot.

The canon a610 does decently at 400 but the Fuji F10 (being phased out and selling for $199 at some stores in the USA) goes to 1600 speed. Its replacement the F11 is even cleaner at 1600 speed.

Stick with the major brands like tiffen, hoya, canon, nikon, etc.
Avoid the Sunpak at all costs! We tried 2 of them on a zoom and when zoomed to 300mm, images were really distorted! Put my Tiffen on and it worked properly. Others have reported the same. Sunpak has a long warranty but will only replace it with another defective filter!

Look at the Bogen/manfrotto Digi series they even include a great way to carry it while walking. I use the 719b model.

The build quality on the canon is better than Sigma anyday.
The optica quality on the Sigma is better than Canon if you get the
APO version. You might want to look at the 100-300 canon USM a bit more but way faster focus than Sigma. Sigma lets you get closer for
macro shots, canon does not.

Cobb county photo society, Southeastern Photographic Society, Roswell photo club and another that meets at Emory, cant recall the name...
For the person in Birmingham, these clubs sometimes go to Sloss furnace to shoot.

I currently run an EOS-3 w/ PB-E2 system with a Metz flash, which to say the least, is a large package to lug around. For family events I would like to purchase a smaller EOS body that has built in flash to cut down on the total weight and size of what I carry around.
I think the popup flash will be blocked somewhat by your lens selection. Instead of the Metz pick up a Vivitar 283, they are not that big or heavy and you will get much nicer family pics in bounce
mode and no red eye for about $40 used..
-
Vivitar 283 used or new, cheap, powerful, tilt for bounce flash, easy to set, great color balance.

Here is one way to check shutter actuations:
http://www.perezdesigngroup.com/content/view/21/65/
Clean the sensor yourself, lots of info on that to be found.

You will not find canons software on the internet...
There is a way to tell shutter releases without the software from the camera I think, but I dont know how. If he says 600 make him prove it.
Send it out of the country for repairs, even to Japan if you have to.
-
Yes, others are correct if it is one of the older models of the Series one Vivitars, they were very good, I had one at one time.
I still would not use a teleconverter on it and I dont think they
made a matching one for the Series ones, but I could be wrong.

Canon A610/620 or fuji F10/F11.
-
Sounds like weight is a concern too. How about a mixture?
How about the Canon 20-35 F3.5-4.5 USM, Canon 50mm F1.8, Canon 70-200 F4LUSM.
-
These two the 28-105 MkII and the 100-300 USM will be the best.
The 75-300 III USM is pretty good too, both will be a little
softer at the 300mm end. Get both with lens hoods.
-
People usually buy Nikon to use their great lenses. With the older nikon lens so cheap now try to get on of them instead. The vivitar
will be mediocre and with teleconverter it will be even worse.
-
You left out the Canon Pro1, I think it has most if not all those items covered.
-
Canon A610/620 or fuji F10/F11 are about as good as it gets. Which is not bad at all. The Canon will be easier to learn it has a very good menu system, the Fuji is much harder to do anything in the menus.
-
The Canon A610 has a usable 400 speed, those panasonics dont.
Focus is fast and accurate. For $30 you can get an energizer 15 min charger and 4 AA NIMH batteries. They can be recharged many times maybe 1000 times max. Those Li-ion wear out too and will cost about $40 for a replacement.
Oh the A610/620 will do over 500 shots on one charge. Forgot to charge the batteries? Any store in the world has AA alkalines you can use. LI-ion that will take about 4 hours to charge..
-
on my GIII the lens assembly was loose and that required ripping the cover off the front to get to the mounting screws. You will have to recover it if you do this, the cover is not reusable. You can shoot it like it is but its much nicer feeling fixed up.
-
You sure you need a DSLR? Would a Canon Pro1 be of any use to you with its built-in 28-200 L lens? It would use the same card as your
G2, not sure if the battery is the same...These may be discontinued
next month and the price maybe under $600. Just mentioned it as a
friend was about to buy an XT and new flash and another $1500 for some lenses, then saw the Pro1 and it met his needs just fine.

I can't carry the 645 on the street, my wrists are too fragile and I suffer very quickly, but I want to work with a waist level finder now, but I as I work very quickly, I would also like a built in meter, but I don't mind manual advance.
You had a waist level finder in the 645 but I guess no meter and the weight I assume was a problem with your wrists? Waist level finders are going to be heavy cameras all of them.Few have built in meters.
Wonder if you could use one of the older MF folding cameras like the
Perkeo II due to its light weight maybe 1/3 the weight of the Mamiya 7 with lens. Easy to keep in your pocket between shots to rest your wrists. But again no meter.Just some thoughts.
