    town of banff

I am about to embark on my new business. I live in a town where you can spit in any direction and hit a photographer. I don't see anyone doing what I do, but there may not be a need for it. I am opening myself up to design too as I have done a bit of logo work. So, I am reinventing as Rascal Photo and Design. The website is almost completely updated and I have my new facebook page too.

Lannie...Thanks for looking. I just don't know about the ratings thing. PN has changed so much over the years. Better? Worse? Not sure. I do know that I used to be very tied in to the ratings expectations. I think that these images (lately) are just posted to keep my portfolio new. Maybe when the kids are back in school, we are settled in and I am still trying to get my name out there in a new town, I will get back into PN.

Jeff...Thanks for the visit! This place is actually less than 20 minutes from our new residence. Not shabby, huh? I actually think that the town of Canmore (where we live) is cooler than Banff. But I LOVE saying "took the kids to Banff today for ice cream"....hee hee hee

and this is a 3 exposure hdr image with a bit of tone mapping.

  1. Thank you Alf. I actually posted this as a glorified snapshot, as it is 5 minutes from where we may be moving to. So, I am surprised and delighted to see your visit. This is a HDR 3 file bracketed shot processed with photomatix. You are right...I could do some nice things with that sky, with a little effort.

Thanks Jeff...Originally, I did not give this pic much notice. I was at the little girls home the other day though and the parents had this image framed on a mantle. I didn't even realize it was mine! I have been photographing this girl for a few years, so we have a pretty good rapport. She really reveals herself at the right time.

Thanks Jeff. I appreciate your feedback. I know...the watermark is really obnoxious. I think that the parents would have liked a few more of her smiling, but they seemed to think that I captured her spirit.

Thank you Hannu! I am pretty good at getting kids to smile, but this little girl would not budge! She had such great expressions anyway, that I think we captured her spirit despite her refusal to smile.

I love this image! I had to click to get closer. I was a bit disappointed that this wasn't a persons face. But it still works...the muted colors and frame are fabulous. I think that adding a live element to it could make it even more dramatic...a hand? Part of a face or a human eye peeking through. I hope you use this again for more compelling images!

Fred...Dang you are thorough! I never noticed those color differences. Now, of course, it is all I can see! Thank you! This is actually an older shot that I meant to put up awhile back. It seems that the whole side of the image has a yellow hue to it. I will have to check my RAW file. Maybe, my strobes were competing with the family's incandescent ...I will check it out though. Thank you.

Michel...Thank you for your visit and comments!

I like the concept. I am distracted by the floor showing on the lower right though. Is this intentional? Also, the arm above her head looks dirty to me. Could just be my monitor though.

Great shot, Sabina. The red and white against the muted blues looks great. The slight tilt for dynamics and the expressions against the not so glamorous back ground make this image really memorable. Nice work!

Thank you Owen! It's actually an amusing story. I was photographing this alternative performance group. The 2 pictured here are a couple. So, they were just kind of hanging out. And as is the nature of old theatres, dust was raining down. Jades was rubbing at his eyes and complaining about the dust. To me, I saw a modern day Romeo and Juliet. So I snapped. We got some really fun images that day. But Jades particularly liked this one too, and is using it for his CD.

  2. Another nice shot Jeff. You really have a great looking family! The exposure looks perfect. Nice DOF. Lovely colors for a redhead. The only things that I might try differently, are a lower ISO or a noise reduction filter. You could also mask the noise with a light vignette or vignette blur. The other thing I might try is to pull the camera up a bit, so the hands are not as dominant and she has a bit more room in the frame. Funny...coming from someone who loves to squash her subjects into tight frames! Again, great shot...I would say the main thing is the noise.
