  1. Just a question regarding how to correlate images shot using more than

one camera body. I am going to start using btoh of my bodies (a 20D and 30D),

rather than have a back-up sitting in a bag, and to help expediency. Now that

I have officially hired an assistant to help carry some of my other equipment

and actually have a bit more freedom to shoot pictures:):):) My question is

how to you keep the pictures in order when shot with 2 bodies, so the pic you

shot with your 50mm/30d is right after the pic you shot with the 70-200mm/ 20d

combo in order of the day. Thanks in advance:)

  2. I have been using a portable set of lights for the last year

for my 100% on location shoots. My set-up consists of:

    -a Multiblitz Compact 200 head

    -Mulitiblitz Profilux 400 head

    -large reflective umbrella

    -small white transparent umbrella

    -2 pieces foamcore

I was looking on upgrading my overall set-up to include a

couple of more lights, likely a hair light and background. I am

just a little confused on the direction I am heading. Should I be

getting a couple of 800s and push the 400 and 200 into the

respective hair/background positions, or am I off base. Any

direction on softbox/umbrella, general light modifiers I should be

bringing into play would also be appreciated. One last question, I

am currently using a sync cord and would like to get a universal

remote, any suggestions. I really appreciate any help in advance.

    Yours, Sean

  3. I hope I am not being redundant with this question. I did a

quick search on the board's archives and could not find a direct

answer, so here it is...is there a list of Canon and third party

lenses that are compatible with both 1.6 and full frame sensors. I

currently own a 20D (and love it), but would like to ensure that

my 'cash for glass' goes into something I won't be selling on EBay

when the time comes to go full frame. Thanks in advance.

  4. A very simple question that I am sure will beg a very simple

answer. If one of my wedding clients wanted a low-res disc of

images, do I simply interpolate them down to around 500ppi on the

short end, save them as a jpg and that is it. Will this prevent them

from upsizing again without losing quality, or am I going about it

    the wrong way?

    Thanks

  5. I have just become the proud owner of an Epson 2400 (it's in the

mail) as per discussions from a previous post..thanks for all the

advice. I have decided to use the premium luster paper and ordered 2

13" x 39' rolls, since Epson does not manufacture it in 4x6 and 5x7

size. My question now is what cutter should I be buying? Is it a

pro rotary cutter that I want or something else? Also, how does one

go about getting the print off the printer to trim? Hope these

questions are not too elementary, I am just a newby to rolls and a

    little confused. Thamnks in advance.

  6. I posted a week ago to inquire about a quality printer to buy

for my small, but growing photo business. I had (have) been using

the Canon i9900 and was having growing concern over the archival

factor and the quality of my black and white prints. I took my

helpful tips and researched the 2200, 2400 and 4800. Really would

love to own the 4800, but can't justify cost vs. output. The ink

difference between the 2200 and 2400, steers me in the direction of

the 2400. The question I have now is is the cost of ink a major

concern (what are my costs per 8x10-are they economical vs. lab wet

process)and is the BW that much better in the 2400 vs. the 2200, in

your opinion. I would also appreciate anyone who feels strongly in

steering me away from the 2400, with valid, unbiased knowledge, of

    course. Thanks in advance!

  7. Here is my situation. I have been the proud owner of a Canon

i9900 for almost a year. In that time I have been making great

prints at low cost, but as my business expands, my concern about the

archival quality of my enlargements is becoming more and more of

something I think about. I have been looking at several printers,

but would like some input from the people here. What I want is a

printer for both colour and black and white (with true as possible

BandW tones), with size up to 13x19 (or even 20x24), with guaranteed

archival quality and cost effective prints (maybe even with the

option of continual flow ink). Any help appreciated!

    Thanks, Sean

  8. I have just converted my entire business to digital and plan on

doing all enlargement orders up to capacity 13x19. My question is

how everybody with a digital darkroom set-up inhouse doing their own

enlargements handles the off sizes (8x10 and 11x14)for their

clients. Do you print at 8x10 on 8.5x11 paper and trim, or do you

print at 8x10 and leave border. Do you print 11x14 on 11x17 paper

and trim or sell your sizes as 11x17. My concern is framing issues

when the client gets the picture home. Does anyone know if frame

manufacturers are producing inkjet paper friendly frames now or if

paper manufacturers are thinking of producing frame friendly paper?

Please help me find the answers.

  9. I shot some work for a local theater company last fall and

collected payment for digital transfers, time and built a usage fee

into my prints made for press attendees, etc. Now, one of these

plays is going to New York and being put on by a "shoestring"

(directors quote) company there. As I have no hands-on dealings with

these people, I am really unable to monitor usage of individual

images. I have given a digital transfer to a press agency and the

director would also like the three images chosen sent on a hig-res

disc for use by her. I told her there would be a small fee, but gave

no numbers and she was agreeable. My question is, can I give a type

of blanket usage for the images and if so, how much am I looking at?

I have no idea how to go about pricing this and need a little

    direction.

    Thanks so much!

  10. I know this is a fairly amateur question, but I was wondering

what multipurpose matte paper would one recommend for use in a Canon

i9900? I am a little confused with the term matte finish, because

when I get my lab to print on matte, it is what I would term matte, a

flat, almost pearl finish, but so much of the matte in consumer paper

is simply paper, with little to no finish. I want to be able to

attain lab results. If anyone could steer me in the direction of

bulk sales options (preferably in Canada), that would be great also.

    Thanks so much!

  11. Could someone please explain to me the idea of low res image

disc. I am new to digital and am planning on giving clients a low

res (unprintable) disc right off the top after a project and then

giving them the high res. files on a seperate disc after a minimum

enlargement order. Is it the same idea as saving for the web

(convert file to 72dpi, while saving the high res at 300dpi). Some

direction on this issue and optimum workflow to achieve this would be

much appreciated. I am using Adobe 7.

    Thanks so much!

  12. I am in a situation where I may potentially land a large

portriat contract for a university faculty. Although details are

still rather sketchy and a price has yet to be hammered out, I feel

it very likely that I get the job (connections, yay!). I have been

tapping the local family portrait market for about a year and have

never really pursued the money making opportunity of business

portraits, which I know is out there. My normal family sitting

(currently shot analog) is $195.00 (Can) and includes a proof book

(w/10proofs) and an 8x10 enlargement. The dean of the music

department at said university has asked for digital files, so

naturally I will be shooting digital. I plan on shooting for high-res

images to be given to the university to print for year-end reports,

flyers, etc as well as for web-use. My question is, how do you price

this, surely it wouldn't be right to price at $195.00 (plus a small

usage fee) for each individual (195.00x30=$5850+usage), or is it??

Just would like some direction from people who work the business

    portrait market.

    Thanks in advance!

  13. Just curious, what range are you looking for for day rate and post-processing for a job like this. I am primarily a portrait photographer and pricing for jobs like this is not something I specialize in. I know what I think a job is worth , but I wondered what the market is asking. I need help!

    Thanks

  14. I have been asked by a small (22 room) independently run inn to

take some pictures of their rooms for website and brochure usage. I

will be shooting digital and giving them a disc with high res files

and letting them have outright usage from there on in, unless, of

course, they need, or want any prints made. My question is what to

charge (lower range, as it is small town, lower market value), how to

display the final product and how to breakdown the charges for

billing. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

  15. I must say the timing of your post is unreal! I have been in the beginning stages of converting my proofing methods in the exact opposite direction from you, going from the standard 4x6 proof book to the dvd slideshow/thumbnail index proof book package. I have only been in the business one year and have been completely disenchanted wiht the enlargement sales orders I receive off the proof albums. I think it spells one thing....scan, scan and more SCAN. I recently purchased my first digital camera, although I still plan to shoot my Pentax 645 for portrait set-ups and scan. I would say you are doing it the right way already, the people wanting the hard proofs are looking to scan the enlargements themselves, so if they want that, charge extra (I plan on offering this option), but stay where you are with the DVD option.

P.S. Could you let me know what software you are using to create your DVDs, I was eyeing the PHOTODEX GOLD, but wondered what you thought.

    Thanks and good luck!!!

  16. Have been adapting of late to the digital world in my photo

business and have been thinking about doing custom DVD proof albums

for my customers. I have been looking at the Ilead DVD Workshop, but

wondered if anyone had any opinion on this or other products.

    Thanks, Sean

  17. I was asked about doing this job only two days ago, on account that the last photographer had apparently dropped the ball and rubbed the owner of the dance studio the wrong way. I do have a local studio that does primarily student school developing, but have not got any prices yet on package development. I intend on doing this without a make-up artist or assistant and as far as what I meant about "artistic licence", is I plan on artistic flow in the pictures, not one stop-snap style. I will be shooting digital and intend on likely 10 shots/student. Black and White, with a little spot colour is another thing I was thinking about, to add uniqueness to the portraits.

  18. I have just been offered a job doing year-end 'graduation'

portrait work with a local dance studio. My problem is, I am not

really sure about pricing policy for people doing this kind of work,

which I am sure will be quite comparible to any school portrait work

out there, although the opportunity for artistic licence is more

flexible. There are 75 students at this studio I will be taking

pictures of. Typically, I am assuming that most of the money is made

off the photo packages (which the owner has already made clear that

she wants a $5/per package cut), but is there any charge for the

shoot itself or is it pro-bono?? Please any input would be

appreciated on pricing, package development or anything else

    pertinant.

    Thanks so much, Sean
