  1. A friend (Uma), his wife (Rama) along with their 18 month old son Vrishank (my son Ananth is also same age)

    stopped by our

    place last Sunday.

    Some candids...

Most indoors taken @ ISO 400/ 800 at around F4. Outdoors I stopped down to F5.6 with ISO 100.

    First Pic

    More pix @ Vrishank

  2. Thanks! Its partly my reluctance to use ISO 800, I find it good but for some reason I set my ISO to be 400 (in the day it is usually auto). I shd not be sensitive to that light noise @ ISO800

I got the same advice too: bounce flash better than faster lens, I just ordered the faster lens. I am going to India in a month, I guess I will get a flash once I return, i dont like spending all at once...

  3. Hi,

A friend of us just had a baby and they were coming home, I had my K10D + kit lens and took all these pictures with

built in flash. Please give your comments regarding composition technique

One thing I noticed is the flash shadows, I guess here is where an external flash bounced will give better light

I have also ordered tamron 28-75mm F2.8 for these kid of pix, hopefully I can avoid the built in flash next time...

    Here are the pictures:

First pic shows the parents and second & third has friends doing the traditional welcome by doing a arathi

Subsequent pix are just the parents/ baby and last one represents the friends gathered...

  4. For me, both the lenses in total cost ~1300. I dont want to put that much money into a hobby

I bought my K10D off craigslist for $500 (when I bought, total 800 pix were taken and I have taken another 600 pix over the 4 weeks)

I am more of bargain guy

I like the combination though - weather sealing, fast lenses with reach 16-135mm coverage

  5. For some reason, I am not fond of teles, but I guess you are speakibg from extensive experience.

How about DA16-45 (I can get used ones < $300)and tamron 28-75 ? not much telezoom but decent wideangle, also faster & longer lens for indoor people photographs?

Okay: so far these are the combinations:

    pentax/ tamron 18-250 + tamron 28-75 ($430/$350 used + $350 or)

    tamron 17-50F2.8 + pentax 24-90 ($425 + $300 keh used)

    pentax 16-45 + tamron 28-75 ($300 + $350)

  6. Hi,

I recently bought a K10D used. I have the kit lens

I am planning to buy these lenses:

    Tamron 17-50 F2.8 & Pentax 24-90 F3.5-F4.5

    or

    Tamron 17-50 F2.8 & Pentax 28-105 F3.2-4.5

    My thought process:

Tamron standalone will help me indoors/ low light family photos/ portraits

Pentax 24-90 will help normal walk around outdoors as standalone lens.

Pentax 28-105 might give me total longer reach like 17-105 b/w two lenses and this pentax lens is also cheaper. But

then i miss the slight wideangle of 24-90

They have lots of overlap that way I can stick to one lens per photo shoot rather than going back b/w lenses

My interests (My portfolio will give some examples):

I like taking lots of low light/ available light photos as well as photos of my family members (I have a 16 month old

    son)

So far I dont remember missing telezoom capabilities with my prev camera (sony s85 with lens 34-105 F2.0-2.5)

but after using the kit lens 18-55, Irealize I like the wide angle and most of the time, indoors need wide and they are

    also not that well lit...

Down the line, I plan to get flash AF540

    Thanks

  7. sony dsc-v1 might fit u good, it is a small camera but has all the bells and whistles to be considered a prosumer. of course battery life is problem (no AA batteries ) and need memory stick (pro), is currently replaced with dsc-v3 but v1 is considered the pocketbook equivalent of F717
  8. U need to look at the exif information: If you are using win XP, right click on the photo, then go to summary tab and click on advanced, you will see the full information abt a pic including capture time, date, ISO speed, aperture, shutter etc

If u edit using SW other than Photoshop, u will lose this information

Other option is to set the menu for imprinting date and time on

    Hope it helps....

  9. Hi Marvin,

I have Sony DSC-S85. In low light when the camera is in automatic mode, it goes for the wider aperture and slowest shutter speed is 1/30. Even in the situations where lower speed might be required, it wont go because the slowest most ppl can handhold is 1/30 ( i read in in dpreview S85 review) If u want a higher shutter speed, then go got higher ISO (and deal with hi noise later) and wider aperture. This is my experience with S85...

  10. If you are looking at buying camera for just hobby purposes, I suggest Sony DSC-F717, great swivelling lens (fast 2.0 to 2.8 Max aperture), decent 5X optical zoom, good noise performance, now price is arnd ~500, main issue is that memory stick is expensive, otherwise F717 is the leader in 5 MP segment....

Also canon G3 is considered best in 4MP sgement with good image quality, flash hot shoe, cheaper memory.... dont go for G5

Somebody in this forum said G3 is on a liquidation sale for $404 good deal, check it out...

  11. Hi Sunil,

Ur is an interesting question: Small CCD means high noise but good quality lens is cheaper to make... Right now we have the so called crossover cams like Sony F828 (notwithstanding purple fringing and noise issues), Minolta Dimage A1, newer Canon Pro1, nikon 8700 etc that can produce excellent images in a low weight package. People can damn small sensor cameras for noise but as Mike Reichmann in his www.luminous-landscape.com site says, these newer crossover cams are making a strongcase for all in one cam which can compete with the SLRs in terms of usability, performance....

Dont consider urself stupid because lower cost digicams show good quality as ur high cost SLR, its just that digital camera technology evolution made certain things cheaper....

For landscapes, digicams are as good as digislrs. Lots of people like deep DOF digicams give. People have been succesful using Sony F717 type cameras etc. Only in action situations and low light situation where high ISO is essential, digicams lags but I am sure that over time, digicams will catchup too as customers want low weight, high qaulity cameras with high "fun" factor which digicams provide in abundance!

  12. Try Sony DSC-V1. Even though, it is 5 MP > 4MP u want, it is very small, u can always carry it around. It has lots of manual controls including aperture, shutter priority modes and manual mode. It has a full-fledged hot shoe. U can add conversion lens to it. most of the Photo.net patrons always go for canon/ nikon but with digital P&S sony quality is very good. I use DSC-S85 and I am satisfied, v1 is the next stage. Word is that V1 is the smnaller cousin of the much acclaimed Sony's F717 with all the features in a smaller body. I believe now the prices have come down. chk out www.dpview.com.
