i have come back from 7 months travelling to 4 continents and about 18 flights with undeveloped film and had no obvious problems.
take it in carry on.

i was concerned about this with my eos 50e in antarctica but had no serious problem. a few times when the battery is low and it got cold it needs to be put in a pocket for a while. Worth keeping a spare in your pocket to save missing anything.
there is a big problem with condensation on every thing when you come inside to warm after being in the cold. I would leave my camera in its insulated case (lowpro) for a while when i god back in to allow it to warm slowly.
not sure if there are any 10d or digital specific problems in the cold.

Can anybody tell me what the battery specs on the 10d translate to
in reality in terms of number of photos or time. i am aware that it
will vary depending on flash and functions. just a rough guide.

to start with 4 days isnt even close to long enough to see patagonia and certainly not long enough to get much in the way of photo opurtunities. a sun rise on the fitzroy mountains or cerro torre is awesome. See my folder for one of fitz roy
watch our when taking shots with snow or glaciers as the light meter can get tricked.
