<i>On a somewhat related note, are there rules for desiging things like this or do you just have to have an eye for it?</i>
<p>
YES. there are rules for everything. you need to understand balance, proximity, alignment, and hierarchical relationships between primary data,(name) secondary data (buisness name) and tertirary data (phone numbers.)
<p>
on the card you've got "special" on one line and "event photography" on the second. drop the font size to about 11 points, all of that info should line up under the name of your wife's business from end to end. then drop the phone numbers font size to about 8 points, and i would lose the phone icons and substitute [p] [f] [e] or something similiar

web hosting: about $95/year.<br>
domain name: about $15/year.<br>
FTP application: $15-25 one time fee.<br>
Software: free-$400+ (EditPlus2 is free PC based/Taco is free Mac based, if you are using Photoshop 5.5-9 or CS/CS2 you can build pages using Image Ready, you'll still need to know how to edit html, but there are more than enough sites that will help you)
<Br><br>
You can learn HTML, it is rather simple. DESIGNING a web page that looks intelligent and functional takes a good understanding of design principals, not unlike shooting a good photograph.

My comments pertain only to your site design.
I'm not a big fan of italicised text.
The large bodies of text need to be either justified or left aligned rather than centered (princing/bio/how to dress pages, etc). The hard line of aligned text is easier for the eye to navigate, it's a cleaner visual. the text doesn't need to be so large. if i have to scroll down a page to read something...i probably won't finish it.
I don't care for the fade in/fade out between pages.
Don't know if you wanted the arrows to rollover for each item on the navigation menu, but you have two arrows showing certain pages and on the weddings page the arrow points to portraits and the weddings link is gone. I think the arrow should point to the page you are on.
i would prefer than when the thumbnail is clicked, the larger image fills the space where the thumbnails reside, rather than opening up a new page. I then have to scroll down to find the links.
your basic layout is good, it just needs fine tuning.

i have been through 5 lomo lca's in as many years. some were new, others were used. for the current prices...it's not worth it. if you want saturated colors try a few things:
1. shoot 100 ISO at 80.
2. shoot kodak EV slide film
3. cross process slide film
Using a lomo by itself won't guarantee great shots. some of it is luck, some of it is film and the rest is that unknown factor the lomo contributes.
The color splash isn't a well built camera, so for $70 there are a huge number of options for cameras.

nice colors.
is the camera/lab cropping the edges of the circle off?
after i saw your post last week, i ordered one from DWR as well. for $30...why not. should be fun

i had a guy, who walked BEHIND me while i took a photo, claim he was in the photo. he wanted the roll of film (sorry, no) or some money. he told me a story of some guy who was on the same block the day before and got his ass kicked and all his stuff ripped off. i got the point.
since i was in a rather rough block i told him i had to go to the atm. so we walk together out of the block to a better street. then he introduces himself and asks my name! i had cash on me so i gave him about $8...whatever...I was a bit nerve wracked at the time, but i think i kept my wits and the situation ended alright.
the photo i took didn't even turn out.

just upload your photos, then go to menu>photos>slideshow settings.
change the settings.
this is just a "slide show" coupled with any song on your ipod. and you don't need an ipod with video to do this. a nano can do it.
that is the simplest way.
-
upload the images, set the Menu to show pics while playing the music already ON the iPod.
that's one way to do it. you could create an iDVD file with specific music then export the file and move it to your ipod. you have more control over transitions in iDVD, not to mention intro text etc.
smart idea.

Unless you're Bob Dole, use first person.
Everybody knows you bloody wrote the bio, so why refer to yourself by your own name?
-
film noir is such a great way to study lighting. Rent some films by Jules Dassin. I always
attempt to determine where the source lights are during a scene as well as framing in the
scene. the third man is a beautifully shot film.
-
<i>Then we turn around and we don't want to hire a professional web designer. Why not?
</i> <br><br>Precisely. Using front page is like showing up to a wedding with a
disposable camera.
-
I can stand bios written in third person. everyone knows you wrote the bloody thing. Instead of "Kimberly got her first camera when she was a toddler." Try "I got my first camera when..."

<i>Why bother with Holgas? The quality or lack thereof is too inconsistent</i><p>Consistancy is for the weak.

i have been shooting night photography for 2 years with a variety of medium format
cameras, including the mamiya 6. can't get much lower light than under a full
moon.<br><br>
get a tripod, shoot at f8, bracket, bracket, bracket.

i don't think you need a themed backdrop. christmas cards are usually a visual reference
of the family's change from the prior year, who cares what the background is.
shoot outside with a shallow dof or inside with any backdrop.

From what I understand, the only time the SU-4 won't work is when
using a dSLR, it's the pre-flash from the camera that triggers the SU-
4 early. I am betting that the SB-28dx won't trigger the SU-4 early
when on my N80. Am I right?

everytime I don't have a camera with me, I miss incredible opportunities.
your passion is an artists passion. and your wife is stunning.
-
Bob,
I'd put money on you any time. that is simply a stunning photograph.

I have a sellers permit/business license, so I can buy uncut large mat sheets at almost wholesale.
I was using light impressions, but by cutting my own, i dropped the cost of matting by around 50%. which give me more profit :).

Take $400, buy a Holga 120N for $20 and spend the rest on Ilford delta 100. Which at
$2.50 a roll will give you 146 rolls of film.
Then go shoot...
-
Two years ago I bought an SQ-A, 50mm, 80mm, & 150mm for about $1500.
The prices have fallen drastically since then. You can buy a body for about $100.
Borrow it and shoot with it. You'll either love or hate the square.

What will be missing in 30 years is the ability for our kids kids to go through boxes of
photographs of their grand parents. Digital images will die on a hard drive which has
crashed, or lost on some old cd burned and mislabled.
The soft quiet sound of sorting through pieces of paper processed from negatives is what
will be missing.

Keith Laban: <i>You seem to be assuming that we all like taking pictures and making photographs.
<br><br>
Personally speaking I find image making a constant struggle and the source of much heartache. I'm not sure I make images because I like to make them; it's more of an obsession or compulsion.</i>
<br><Br>
Wow. And Keith's work is stellar. But I agree. If I <b>couldn't</b> take a photograph, life would be unbearable.

I bought both the Flexaret VI and Yashica 124 G at the same time. While I liked the style of the Flex, the view finder was just too damn dark. I kept the 124G, which is a great camera. I've had absolutely no issues with it.
