1. I have a question about the low light photography.

In low light situation, If my flash 420Ex is attached and is ON, when I focus,

are the shutter speed \ exposure already adjusted in (let's say Tv mode).

What I have noticed is that it's probably not.

In low light the exposure will blink if I increase the shutter speed to say 45.

Shall I still go ahead and click the photograph and exposure will be fine. How

will I know how much the flash will compensate for the low light ? Do I have

the control over it ? How can I calculate such stuff.

    Thanks,

    Rajat

  2. With the presumption you are beginner, you need a lens which you would never regret you ever bought. That is Canon 50mm F1.8. This lens is roughly 75$ and is an absolute bargain. It has an excellent quality.
Go for tutorials over the internet. The best is to go to your local library and get books which teach you the basics about lighting, aperture, exposure, composition etc...

    All the best

  3. WHen you use flash, the flash metering takes place for the subject(where you focussed) and that remained the same in your case.

What you see in the viewfinder is the ambient metering and that is for the background. By keeping the shutter speed the same, and increasing the f-stop, you underexposed your background. Hence, the background is darker by 1 stop.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Thanks.

  4. Hi,

I have a 5 days old baby boy. And I am trying this pose for baby and

    mom. Need your help !!!

I saw this image in the same category and then forgot who posted it.

I am wondering how best to shoot this with the available resources

    Canon Elan7, 420EX speedlite, 50 mm mk II, 70-200 f4 and 17-40F4 and

    yeah a tripod.

I have the above. Following are the things which I want to create.

    a) lighting. I have a flash 420EX and a 500 Watt Lamp.

    b) The black background behind ( not talking about photoshop)

Yeah, I know the diffusion effect.

    Any inputs are greatly appreciated.
00D4qr-24972484.jpg.6ae7bc95fd715e2342bb77f73ae3a8c6.jpg

  5. I Agree. buy 17-40.

I have the same combination. Started with 28-105 initially and then got 50 f1.8. Then 17-40 F4L. Sold 28-105 and bought 70-200 f4.

I have 17-40 for 1.5 years now and never regretted my decision. Infact, the combo of 17-40, 50mm and 70-200 is The Best !

  6. 2 years back, there was a scam. Website. http://gpscomputers.com. They took money from paypal and 4 of my friends dished out 500$ for a pentium 4 laptop which was worth around 1300$. They ofcourse never got the laptop as well as the money.

But, one of my other friends, used American Express Blue to do a price match. Paid 1300$ to buy laptop from circuit city. Called Aerican express and told them he sees the same laptop at http://gpscomputers.com for 500$. American express pays the difference upto 300$. So not bad, he made 300$ profit out of the deal anways.

Unfortunately though, Aerican express now is not doing the price match and best value gurantee from online stores. It's only doing it with newspaper ads or if you see a hard print of the price.

    So i suggest the following.

    a) Love photography and be on photo.net

    b) Also go to http://anandtech.com

    c) Also go to http://fatwallet.com, click on forums on hot deals. Fatwallet is among top 10 websites in America. How many people know that..hmmmmm

    d) Get a good credit card, which ensures that you get the money back even if you do not get the product.

    Happy Shooting.

  7. If I were you, I would stay with Nikon. Techonolgy changes every day and Canon will come up another upgraded 30D or so after it's current 20D.

Give yourself some time. If you still feel you are unhappy, ofcourse decision is yours. Come to Canon ! But, do ensure that you do sell your Nikon stuff at a good price. remember you are just making a switch and regret is the worst thing one can do to himself. So better don't do that....ok ! Best -Raj :-)

  8. I do have the tripod\camera bag and have no ntentions of putting the lens on the eye for 2 hours while watch the parade from the viewfnder :-)) and also the need of a telephoto lens. There is no single way of getting the ends cuz there are ofcouse other options ( for x. using primes..etc).

Reason I asked this was I remember going to Las egas with my Elan and 17-40 and 50mm 1.8. I clearly know that 17-40 couldn't be used all that much. That's why 70-200 f4 is not an option guys.

Having said that, I am going to NYC in 2 weeks on way to Philadelphia. Will stop by BH and checkout these on my own. But ofcourse I don't think I need to go to gymn :-))

Thanks a lot for the feeedback

    Raj

  9. I have been on a lookout for telephoto lenses and think I have saved

enough for a 70-200 2.8 IS. Question is how heavy it is? If it is too

heavy I will go with 1\3 weight of 70-200 f4.

    I am comfortable with 17-40 f4 weight.

Since there is no store around here where I can check it out for

real, the question has good amount of importance attached.

  10. I did try to post earlier too, of the choices I need to make. The

decision has just been too difficult for me.

Plz. don't tell me it is only me who needs to decide, cuz I know

that. I want your advise folks to help me decide better. Thanks in

    advance for that :-)

    I already have a 50mm 1.8 and 17-40 f4. I had 28-105mm too, which I

    sold around 5-6 months back.

I know that all the 70-200 are optically sound and the primes would

be better or superior than the zooms

    My choices :

70-200 f2.8 IS - OUT OF MY BUDGET AND IT'S WAY TOO HEAVY, 3.2 Pounds

    or so.

70-200 f2.8 Non-IS - I can buy it. The only problem I feel is the

weight. Can I handle it? I have a canon Elan 7E and though I am

medium built, I don't know for sure, if I can carry it all the time,

given I do not have any telephoto coverage with any of my other

    lenses.

70-200 f4 - It's light, less expensive, pretty good optics. But, it

is mainly a daylight lens. Limits my capabilities.

Prime Collection -Yakim can help me here :-) . The prime collection,

    I can build is - 85mm, 135mm and 200mm - All non-L lenses, so it fits

the budget and the focal lengths. But, I have never shot earlier

changing lenses every now and then. I am a bit skeptical about doing

this all the time. Guys, mainly who go for prime lenses, how often do

you tend to change lenses, have you ever felt lost as to which focal

    length to use?

What would I shoot? I want to mainly shoot nature, landscapes,

family, friends, sunsets, sunrises, potraits and that should take 90%

of the photos I will take with any of the lenses I want to buy.

    Please advise,

    Thanks.

    Raj

  11. Hi Guys,

For a long time now, I have been thinking of buying a good telephoto

    lens.

    a) Should I be buying a prime telephoto or zoom telephoto ?

I have been thinking of buying a prime since I know for sure that it

will be good optically, will give me nice photographs and will be

fairly light. Should there be other considerations ?

My choices for now are fixed on

    200mm f2.8

    and 70-200 f4.

I would love to have the f4, but I am thinking of situations where it

would fail to give me a properly exposed photograph ( handheld).

Appreciate the suugestions and the feedback.

    Raj

  12. Trust Yakim !! He says what he believes in ! I have been writing in the ESO form for an year now and I trusted him in a few of my lens choices !!

Also, I do have 17-40 It's a great lens, and talking about distortions what would you expect at 17mm than making it work for you !!

I don't know abot Tamron lens, but as far as 17-40 is concerned, I would be honest that I was taking other lens in consideration like 20-35mm n or the 20mm prime lens, but finally wanted to get a zoom and much wider lens. Got the lens last year and all these 8 months have been quite happy wiht it !!

  13.

The EF 85 1.8 USM and EF 17-40 4L USM are better and pretty close in terms of build and MF feel. Both feel kind of cheap compared the silky precision of my Nikkor 50 1.4 AIS and 135 2.8 AIS.

I do not know where that comes from. Cuz, I recently got my new 17-40L and it does feel very vey smooth.

I haven't owned any Nikkors but had borrowed from my friend. They are OK.

  14. I own a 17-40 f4L and in my recent trip I clicked around 10 rolls with just this and the 50mm. I have got excellent results with the 17-40 and feel at the top of the world.

But, as far as the comments about the 24f 2.8, with what I had read while having the quest to buy a wide angle earlier, the 24f 2.8 is an excellent lens.

The only difference is if you want to restrict your shooting style( eg. shoot under low light), money consdierations ..the pro zooms are expensive and stuff.

I have got all my $$$ back with my 17-40 F4L. But, I am sure I would have got the same from 24F 2.8 as well. Only in my case, I didn't want to restrict my focal length. But, that's only me, and you have to make up your mind for 24 f2.8.

  15. Correct me someone if I am wrong. But, with I have experienced I can say that matrix or partial metering depends more on the subject.

It may\maynot be possible to properly expose for the background and the subject. If background is dark and you are exposing for that small candle light then one wouldn't want to expose for the wall or the darkness around since there is nothing there. Partial metering for the candle however is a good thing. Matrix metering will not good results here.

Also, if the light is low, you can't have a lot of DOF and hence background may come out blurred. However, in bright sunlight conditions you may not have to pull up any answers since either partial or matrix would do just fine.

Bottom line : Choose the area which you want to shoot. If you want to get some details in darker areas, meter for mid-tones. And try AEB to look for meanigful answers to your preferred style of shooting.

    I hope it helps.

    Happy Shooting,

    Raj

  16. First thing First and that is that 17-40 is for 699$ at B&H. So this gives you a 200$ price difference. I was in your shoes not long time ago.

I felt like answering your concerns since I got my 17-40 lens. For beginners like us and who are not into pro photography, a zoom feels good, since it adds to the flexibility.

For me primes would have served better, but then I thought to myself, if I would be ready to :

    1) First judge the shot. Think about the lenses what I have in my bag.

    2) Judge the lens which will be best suited for a particular shot( Sometimes difficult for beginners. Time is essence )

    3)Change to an appropriate lens.

    4) Move a bit forward or backward and then compose the shot.

IMO "The above will make a good photographer of myself" is more of a cliche.

Technically speaking, if you want to shoot more often at f8 or less, why don't you go for the versatility of a zoom.

I have yet to test my lens but for all the reviews I have read, 17-40 sounds like a geat lens. Ofcourse, you are paying more money to get the primes and you will always have to think about changing the lenses for every shot you will take.

Remember, at super wide like 20 and till about 28, moving forward or backward will only distort the perspective, you were loking for.

All above is my own humble opinion for the choices I made when I went for 17-40.

    I hope it helps.

    Happy Shooting.

  17. It never happened on my camera. I advise you to get it exchanged using the "return policy". Also try getting the american express( GOLD card )for your future shopping. It extends the "return policy" to 90 days, irrespective of the vendor.
