Well I haven't made up my mind, if I had I wouldnt be asking a question here, I am going through a thought-process and
I wanted someone to guide me in right direction.

I know andrew what you meant by roaming around with 20 DVDs, but if you use DVD-RW each comes in 4.7gb and now a days you get 15 DVD-RWs in $25/- so even if i am carrying 10 with me, i am carrying 47gb, its way lighter than CDs and has lot of multiple use in future.

I have only come across this product

anything other than this ?

Hello Friends,
Okay, the deal is I am heading for my India trip in mid-march and
looking for a portable storage device. I am kind of stuck between
portable hard-drives and portable DVD writers. PSDs have their own
issues; I really don?t know what makes hard-drive crash and what
precautions could be taken. I am looking for something around 20gb,
[no image preview would be fine] but if there were sort of data
confirmation it would be great, not too fast not too slow. I am NOT
looking for mp3 player or anything like that, I just need it for my
photographic needs.
If I buy a portable DVD writer, I could also be able to use it in
future [while not vacationing] I could use it to burn DVD and backup
my RAW files [or slide scans] on 4GB DVD, that is the advantage of
DVD over hard-drive.
Currently I have total 1.5GB memory cards [2 512mb & 2 256mb], so to
use a full 4.7gb DVD I should be buying DVD-Rewritable [right?]. I
am not sure how it works, I mean do I need to have one single memory
card of 4gb to use total DVD [not rewritable dvd] or is there any
sort of buffer in temp disk space, which would let me insert each
card [above mentioned] at a time.
I hope I am not confusing you guys, please let me know if you have
any first hand experience with a nice PSD or a portable DVD writer.
For PSDs I don?t want to go beyond $200 but if a good DVD writer
$300-350 is worth investing.
Thank you very much

How much I could go without screwing up my shots ? Would 4 second exposure [with 1/3 increment] would be safe ?

I meant I would be using Elan 7 ...

Hello
I tried searching for this question on the forum, but couldn?t find
anything specific, my apology in advance if I missed something.
I would be using velvia 50 exclusively for wide angle shots [for
Rajasthan trip in mid-March] [EF 15mm fisheye & EF 17-40] I have
300D for other coverage, I would be using velvia mostly in low-
contrast conditions [mostly twilight], I referred to Fuji data sheet
and it says
For 1-second exposure: no compensation required
Up to 4-second exposure: add 1/3rd [would there be any color shift?]
Up to 8-second exposure: add 2/3rd [would there be any color shift?]
I would be using ɬan 7 and it works in 1/2 stop increment, would
0.17 stop make much of a difference or +1/2 & -1/2 would be fine?
-
Oooooooops I mean Velvia
-
Vevlia in Rajasthan ?
I very recently bought Elan 7 as my backup for 300D, and I think I
would be using Elan exclusively for ultra-wide angles [17mm & 15mm
Fisheye] shots and twilight shots [low contrast scenes]. I would not
be shooting people with Elan [300D for portraits], so you guys think
Velvia 50 makes more sense ?
Or which slide film would you use if you were in my shoe ?

Is this a discontinued version of Schneider
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=3860498889&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

i know a 50mm lens could never replace a real loupe. i have heard a lot mix reviews of canon, Rodenstock and Schneider, really dont know which one is best.
-
I am sorry if this sounds silly, but I couldnt find a decent loupe
thread anywhere [or couldnt locate], I am looking for a decent and
cheap loupe, I have heard a 50mm lens could be used as a decent loupe.

1. tamron 19-35mm
2. 50mm
3. 75-300
skip macro lens, use d60 with 50mm for portraits, you can use telephoto, to flatten certain interesting patterns in crowded indian cities ... but you would need a lot of light to use at 300mm.
-
just out of curiosity, why do you call digital postprocessing a headache ?
-
I am from bombay, every city has a dark corner [bombay is no exception], you would safe if you use your head and dont roam around in places less populated.
-
Woow, I appreciate all the responses, the only issue I find with Jaisalmer is, none of the indian airlines fly there and through railway it would be too time consuming for me. From jaipur itself it takes more than 16 hrs in train to jaisalmer.
Other thought was is udaipur better than jodhpur ?

Hello friends,
I am from India [but currently in DC] and planning to visit Rajasthan
in mid march [during holi: festival of colors]. I would be in
Rajasthan for around 10 days and I think I would stick to two places
instead of covering 3/4 cities. I need some advice about which part
of Rajasthan would offer more opportunity in terms of
people/culture/life-style.
I kind of know I would stay in Jaipur for around 5/6 days and in
Jodhpur for around 4/5 days. I am pretty certain about Jaipur, but
not sure which would be a better choice compare to Jodhpur?is
Jaisalmer better than Jodhpur or I can?t go wrong whichever I pick.
Anyone knows how to decide on accommodation?

please keep in mind that 50mm on 1.6 crop factor is no longer a normal lens, its more like a portrait lens, thats why 1.4-2 works best for portraits.

at f11 you would hardly see any difference, would love to see how it performs at f3.5/4.

Okay sorry for this misleading sentence "My logic is if to get decent shots wide open on 50-1.4, I have to shoot around 2.5/2.8 to get sharp pictures"
I meant shooting at 2.5-2.8 on 50-1.4 not wide open.
I keep hearing a lot of complaints about 50-1.4 is soft at 1.4, so I guess since DOF is so thin at 1.4, the appearent softness is out of focus image, is it ?
-
Okay, I know this is beaten to death here, but my question is more
about what f stop you use while using 50mm [on DSLR] to get a good
sharp portrait [at least sharp eyes, which I think its very critical
in portraits]. On 50mm 1.4, I hear you start getting sharp shots from
2.5-2.8 onwards, so how often one shoots below 2.5 for portraits,
when sharp eyes are desired in images?
I even know that optimum sharpness is highly subjective taste, but I
am talking about decent sharpness and I believe 50-1.4@f2.5 wouldn?t
be as sharp as 50-2.5@f2.5 and even bokeh at 2.5 on both lenses would
be similar [right?].
My logic is if to get decent shots wide open on 50-1.4, I have to
shoot around 2.5/2.8 to get sharp pictures then why shouldn?t I buy
50mm 2.5 macro and save some bucks. BTW I love doing abstract macros
and I also have 100mm 2.8 macro, but having 50mm macro could serve
dual purpose while traveling light.
Thanks in advance

i think it makes complete sense after introducing 10-22, which would make a lot of people to think about having 17-40 or 10-22 and if you go 10-22 route, you would need something from 24-70.
i dont quite understand how much faster is faster now a days when even a f4 on an entry level dslr such as 300D, you can get acceptable results at ISO 800 [and very good results on 20D], and we already have at f2.8. i see lot of potential buyers for this lens.
Good deal? Canon BP-300 for 7 Elan Series
in Canon EOS Mount
