    Move 'Em Out

    Thank God - 7.7

What would be perfect? If the far right rear cowpoke's horse were not cropped and if we could see just a tiny bit more of the tree above the photographer's head - would just make the use of branches as framing component a little more solid / nevertheless / this is truly an excellent photograph. Very well done!

Would work much better were it to be cropped up about 20% or so. Leaving out the sky was clearly a choice you made here; the shadows of clouds on the hills is a nice dynamic - nevertheless, the vast foreground to a bit much and is distracting from the overall enjoyment here. Just my opinion.

    1. Regarding the photo: Technically, what makes this composition work (my opinion) is that whilst you may indeed have split the background in half vertically, and the boat itself horizontally - you've nailed the rule of thirds with the mast and its shadow. Which is primarily why this photo rocks.

    2. Psychology 101:

EVERYONE HAS AN EGO. It is an essential human characteristic. It's one of the things that make us different than animals. And every artist of any sort I've met - even the young obstinate type - LOVES to know what other's think of his or her work.

One of the things that makes something like PHOTO.NET fun for ME is seeing what responses I got on my pictures. it's fun with morning coffee, it's a gas after a long day of shooting, it's something to look forward to after a busy week of traveling. It is an EGO BOOST when others enjoy one of my pictures!

This may SOUND egotistical. It may even BE egotistical. Nevertheless - it is precisely what makes using PHOTO.NET fun for me.

OF COURSE it pi$$es me off when someone (particularly those with not even a single photo up loaded) rate one of my pictures low. And when I go look at the work of said "low rater" and find an empty portfolio, or a portfolio full of what I consider to be below average work, It makes me FEEL BETTER when I find the low rating scofflaw is not a paying member.

Then I love to up load a new photo and see what happens.

It's just a heck of a lot of fun.

And yeah, yeah - all the righteous photogs here are here to "learn."

Well, I've been paid for shooting for over 35 years - and I am still "LEARNING" - but I'm not about to take anyone seriously whose criticism is politically motivated, or whose portfolio is empty, or who has just rated a photo 1/2 and yet has not a single critique relevant to the work at hand.

And I'm not egotistical ENOUGH to bother getting all neurotic about who rated what with what rating to start clipping and monitoring and back&forthing through all the raters in an attempt to "figure out" who gave me a low / high score.

    That's just not fun.

By the way - I just shared all that so you wouldn't feel alone! I'm not bucking for changes at p.net. That's something that will have to work itself out over time.

ps... i rate this a 6/7. or is it 7/6? 7 for aesthetics and 6 for origninality. I'd give it an 8 for technical perfection were that an option.

  1. Love the way you've lined the shadows beneath her breasts to be perfectly matched with the light / dark division at the top of the sofa back. The juxtaposition with the light falling on the wall and on the model combined with the exquisite composition pulled me right in - the excellent use of the angled legs to hold it all together and which add complexity to an otherwise beautifully simple framing make this photo one I'd be happy so see in my own collection. Very groovey, dude! 77

DUDE! I've looked at your entire portfolio. There's not a single photojournalistic unposed shot in the entire bunch. Since you've had so many opportunities to photograph so many people who've been so adversley affected by the terrible American President Ronald Reagan, how come you don't show the world what it's really like through your pictures instead of your big mouth?

And as I indicated above, the "space" above the photo is for headlines on magazine covers. Since RR was the subject, and since EVERYONE, including me had tons of pictures of Maggie and Ronnie together in many situations (including this one) I felt at the time (rightly so according to the then photo editor of NEWSWEEK magazine) this might make a good alternative to the usual "safe" pictures so often shot in the Oval Office back then.

My JOB was to cover the President of the United States. I could not have cared less about his politics then or now. I was recording history.

Renaldo - read more dude, you'll learn a lot more than you know now if you do some research.

BTW - I don't GAF what anyone on PhotoNet thinks as far as politics. I thought the main thing was to learn about photography.

We had 20 - 25 seconds to shoot:

    1. TIGHT Color & Black & White

    2. WIDE Color & Black & White

    That's a minimum of 4 cameras.

You needed a light reading as the F3's and Leicas most of used did not have reliable meters.

Especially when using Kodak Tungsten 160 pushed 1 & 1/2 stops but rated at 320.

Geezo, let's see you do it!

Something is missing. Faces. Everything else is okay, but without the emotional component, you're firing blanks Can't even "read" in which country this was made. Points for good technical quality, however.

If that's an escalator or stairs, it might have been cool to see a person framed between the light shafts. 6/6 anyway, because it's clean, graphic, and demonstrates a very good eye.

Didn't add any smoke or blur. Just a straight shot of my girl at the Getty Museum in L.A. being "attacked" by some goofy art exhibit that walked around all day scaring people. The photo was printed from original TriX neg on silver paper, and scanned on a flatbed. That's it.

Love this image! Frankly, would rather have left it all a mystery as to how you obtaiined it ... though knowing does not in anyway detract from its impact or magic! Superfantastic!
