Just a quick Note: Germany is in the SEMI-FINAL!
Sorry for that. Ok - go on with the Discussion :-).

@John: Could you post some of your Negative-colorscans that you did with vuescan?
-
"Unpleasant transitions" and "rgb-noise" are both almost certainly results of faulty settings
Well, I'm not so sure about this one. After having done some research on the Net, I discovered that there seems to be a problem with noisys shadows in Vuescan. Just have a look at the Photo-i-review at Photo-i.co.uk (under reviews/Software). What do you think?

Could someone who did successfully scan color-negs with vuescan post some examples, please (preferrably Portra-Scans)?

Hi!
After countless tests with my Nikon 9000 I settled down using Vuescan for my
B&W negs. However - I'm not quite sure about my colornegative scans. With
Vuescan I get pictures with a nice dynamic range and great, smoot skintones,
but with very unpleasant transitions to very dark areas. The worst thing is
that dark areas in the vuescan-scans show very strong rgb-noise. When scanning
the Negatives (mostly Portra 160nc) with Nikonscan 4.0.2, the image looks more
contrasty, the skintones are good but not great - but there is no noise in the
dark areas. My question: Is there a solution for the noiseproblem in Vuescan?

@Robert: Nice Pictures. What is your exact Workflow?

Yes, ICE is turned off. I'd like to try the Negative as Positive-Technique but didn't find out yet how to do it correctly: When converted in Silverfast HDR or PS CS2, the image comes out way too dark. Does this have to do with my Gamma-Setting (2.2)?

Hi!
I just got the Nikon 9000 Film Scanner and experienced some highlight-clipping
with the Nikon Scan-Software and B&W-Film. On my previous model (Minolta Elite
5400) I scanned them as 16bit Linears and converted them via Silverfast HDR
(which I still own). Is there a way to scan 16bit Raws in the Nikon Scan-
Software? I tried scanning the Negs as Positives, but the image came out waaay
too dark. Any solution for this?

Hi!
I'm fascinated about the Lighting in Martin Schoellers "Close-Up"-Series (do a
google-search on this!). I've read that this is achieved with two neon-lights.
Are there special Neonlights for Photography? Or are these normal ones "for the
kitchen"?

Hello!
I'm interested in buying the Nikon 8000/9000 Film-Scanner and have some
questions about them:
- What are the advantages of the 9000 over the 8000 in terms of image quality
and speed?
- Is Digital ICE still possible with the optional Glass-Holder? Is it still
possible when wetmounting the film?
- Is it possible to use a USA-Model in Europe (Germany) because of the
different voltage?
- How does these models perform with silver-based b&w-Film and negative-film
(Portra 160NC). I'm not doing any slides.
Thanks in advance for your answers!

I understand that the Glass-Holders are a must for the Nikon 8000 in order to keep the film flat. Will ICE still work with these Glass-Holders?

How does the i900 compare to the Epson V700? Does it have ICE for Film?

Hi!
I'm planning to buy a new scanner, mainly to do MF-Scans. My Budget is about
1000 Euros. Do you have any recommendations? It should give me the highest
resolution (for the money) and Digital ICE. My main candidates so far are the
Epson V700 or V750-models. I've previously owned a Microtek Artixscan 120tf
(aka Polaroid Sprintscan 120) but wasn't too fond of it because of its banding-
issues, the lack of ICE and the unpredictable sharpness-issue. Any other
alternatives than the Epson Flatbeds for that money?
Thanks,
Peter

I noticed that a) some of my shots taken in direct sunlight were underexposed, b) the reading differs from the one in my Leica M6, and c) the reading differs from the reading in my Digi-SLR (Canon 1d Mk2). Its histogram indicates that there's an underexposure by 1 to 1 1/2 stops. However - when measuring during overcast sky, the sekonic meters correctly.

Hi!
After having tested light meters of different Brands (Sekonik and Gossen), I
noticed on both models a severe underexposure (about 1 1/2 to 2 stops) when
used in strong sunlight. I'm talking of the incident method here, with the
white dome over the cell. My question is whether this is normal - so that I
always compensate the reading when using the meter in strong sunlight - or not.
Any help would be apprechiated.
Thanks!

Bob, those shots are nice!
How did you scan them?

Hi!
I have a Polaroid 635 CL Camera with 600 Film and I want to achieve the effect
from the picture in the link. Any Idea how to do this?

Hi!
Is there an "Raw-Ouptpu"-option in the Epson Scan-Software, like the 48bit HDR-
Output in Silverfast, for example?
Thanks,

Hi!
Is the Epson PRemium Luster Paper available in A4 and A3+-Format? In Europe
I've only seen it in Rolls.

Hi!
I'm looking for a nice, satin-matte paper for the Epson r2400. I've
heard that Epson Premium Luster is ideal - unfortunately it's only
available in Roll-formats in Germany. Any other Ideas? How does the
luster paper compare to Epsons Semi-Gloss?

He uses a technique that is called "Lith-Printing". There are several actions that simulate this effect in PS.

Hi!
I'm thinking of selling my Microtek 120tf scanner, since it lacks
digital ICE. How does the upcoming Epson V750 (or even the V700)
compare to a dedicated MF-Filmscanner in terms of Resolution and
sharpness?
Thanks!

Check out www.nitorix.com. Their "BorderIT" gives you wonderful sloppy borders.

Vuescan: Frame spacing with Nikon 9000 Glasscarrier?
in The Digital Darkroom: Process, Technique & Printing
Posted
Hi!
I choose vuescan as my main scanning-tool for the Nikon 9000. The problem is
that when using the glass-filmholder along with 6x6 Negs, my frames are
sometimes chopped or unevenly framed in the preview-window. I understand that
this has to do with the frame-offset-slider. But how does it exactly work? Any
help much appreciated.
