Reminiscent of thirties holywood glamour lighting, creating hard shadows but bringing out the shapes. I think it works great here and B&W is certainly the correct choice.

...Dare I suggest that the white vase at the front looks ever so slightly tilted?

The lighting has brought out the texture in the white petals beautifully. 

The black b/g works very nicely here making you focus on the flowers.
