Double post.

You are going to have to provide actual direct links because they only show 1 750 option when I use the search "Epson 750" term you quoted. My guess is that you are looking at the 700 versus the 750 (both came up when I did the search) or you are looking at an Amazon listing versus a high priced third party that buys space on Amazon. Again, you need to provide links though for us to be able to see the whole story.

>>AND can work with CS4<<
Even though the sales support people didn't tell me this, I am thinking you would still have to run the latest version of ACR through elements and not CS4. Otherwise, it would seem you could just download the latest version of ACR from the website and run that through CS4 (which we know you can't).
I am still curious whether ACR for Elements 9 (the latest) is the same program/has the same feature set as ACR for CS5 though or if it is a stripped down version.

Does anyone know if the version of Adobe Camera Raw that is included in Adobe Photoshop Elements (latest version) is the exact same version as the one in Adobe CS5? I have to upgrade to a version of ACR that works with the Canon G12 but I really am not inspired to upgrade from CS4 to CS5. It would be a lot cheaper to just go with Photoshop Elements IF the ACR plug-in is exactly the same AND can work with CS4. If anyone knows for_sure about this, please post. I called Adobe and after 20 minutes of wasted time they still couldn't confirm one way or another if it was the same version (I didn't even try to ask about CS4 compatibility).

If you have a Gretag/Eye One product, they provide a software utility for free from their website.

Like others, the version listed for Win7 has worked for me. Where I did have a problem was with the video drivers. If you don't have the latest version of those, try updating those too. I found I had to go into the drivers and turn off or reset a few options so that the drivers wouldn't conflict with the color management software.

I think the best thing for you to do is to do two comparison scans on your own scanner and evaluate the results. That will answer the question in regard to what is best for your particular scanner. Each of these scanners can have variances, so only you can test to find out what is best for your particular unit.

-

When was the last time you upgraded your video drivers? CS4 is very picky about video drivers.

I would not recommend this scanner due to the poor light source in the lid. Save up a bit more to get a 4490 or V500. Check the Epson site for a refurbished unit. They often list them for a very good price.

I think John is right. Your setup is not correct for what the scanner requires and thus the scanner is not calibrating correctly. Without seeing your setup in-person, it would be hard for anyone to advise whether it is a usage error on your part or something wrong with your film mounting system.

I have the schematics for that scanner up on my page for scanner dismantling which should help you see which screws need to be removed.

For scanning prints, the optical performance will not matter between these two models. I am not sure about any scanning speed differences, you better research that with Epson. I am not sure if there are any differences with the implementation of ICE for prints with this scanner. Again, you should check with Epson. Don't count on ICE being 100% effective either.

Ditto what William said.

Download the demo versions of Vuescan and Silverfast and then use them. Then you can decide for yourself if they will accomplish what you desire.

Kelly, why are you striking out with an exaggerated post that is unfair to both me and Lou? First off, there isn't (and never has been) any kickback to Lou or anyone else. Yes, I am fortunate to have great customers who tell others about my product but they do it on their own - and they post both positive and negative comments. Your 10 and 20 year claims are such an exaggeration. Another exaggeration is your claim my holder gets mentioned in every thread. I wouldn't be surprised if it is mentioned less times than you jump into scanner threads to post basically the same multi-entry rant over and over and over... and then over again. If you want to criticize about things getting old and repeated too much, start with your own posts.

If you are a student now (even if not in graphics studies), you can get the student discount versions. Check with your school and/or online for places that sell the student version which is a great deal.

The 3170 isn't going to be any sharper than an 8400f unless there is something way out of specification on the 8400f.

-

The 3170 is marginal for film scanning compared to the V700.

-

Optically, you will not see much difference. The V700 holds the film higher off the glass so there is less chance for Newton Rings and I think the EpsonScan software is better than CanoScan but I doubt you would feel the upgrade price was a worthy expenditure.

Use the Canon software, it will give you that option.

Do some googling. There are some discussions on this. Some people have taken out the offending sets of wheels.
In regard to drying time, another thought was what would happen if you placed a good size fan in front of the exit path blowing medium across the paper (not enough to cause it to start moving the paper)? Maybe that would just be enough to speed up the drying process a bit faster. What is the humidity level in your printing room?

-

If it truly seems like pizza wheels versus dirty rollers, I would start by going into the advanced settings for the ink configuration in the Epson printer software and increasing the drying time between passes to the maximum and see if that helps.

My guess is that you just need to delete and reinstall your scanner software so that the files/plugins get installed into the CS4 directories since I am guessing they are now just in the PSE4 directories. Download the newest version first.

Note that the higher priced one is not sold by Amazon. This is what I was describing in my post to you. They are the same scanner but the third party seller is just out looking for a sucker to rip off.
