  1. Friends, I am going to Maine next weekend for 3 days. I knwo it will be frigging

crowded, but time and money only allows such restricted vacation times :(. Up to

the point, what are the best things I shoudl be looking at Acadia NP? And how

accessible these spots are if I don't feel like asking all my mates to walk away

from the car? We wil be staying at Sewell campground, so is there any good

shooting spot around that place to catch a glimse of sunset/sunrise? Thanks in

    advance.

  2. Old thread, but I just want to make sure other users can see it. I made a small test with PQI 4GB 100X card and Sandisk Ultra II 1Gb card. Under linear read test, they scored 8.368MB/s and 8.515 MB/s respectively. But under random read test, PQI scored thres times better (3.99MB/s) against Sandisk UT 2 (1.31MB/s). I used Diskspeed and a card reader for my tests.

<p> Since you are starting up, do not invest big money on expensive bodies, rather stress upon good lenses. If I am in your shoe, I would definitely get 17-40L and 50mm f1.4. You do not need a 85 f1.8 as of now, since 50 1.4 will cover the focal length for portrait shots. And tamron 90mm can fill the gap if you need longer reach. Under the same logic, you do not need a 100mm MAcro USM and 2X converted for now. As a new body, I would purchase a 30D. Save whatever extra cash lying around and dump them in a CD :). Oh, make sure to take out money for your 580EX and STE2. And if you don't have one by now, you have to have a good tripod/ballhead.

  4. Don't go for a glossy screens. You will definitely get an eyesore after using it for couple of hours. If it is going to be your only laptop, go for the 17inch screen, but otherwise go for a smaller screen laptop for the sake of portability. So far, I have used three laptops and non eof them has the tools needed to color correct the monitors. Best I have done so far is with Adobe gama. Now, with Apples macbook laptops, I think you may a get a better screen. Most importantly, if you really die for color correction, you have the option of running MAC OS in one of those machines.
  5. Yep. You just packed too much for 5 days. Arches itself is so astonishing that I could have spent 5 days right there. I think you should reserve at least two days for arches, for the special sunrise/sunset momemnt shots over the arches. Spend a day at Zion and another at Bryce. That leaves only one day in hand and you can use it for Anetelop canyon. However, I don't know how you can manage that, since Arches is on far east Utah, Bryce/Zion is on far south-west and Antelope is on south-east. So be ready for a hectic driving. Otherwise, skip Bryce/Zion.
  6. Being a NE resident for 3 years, I can tell you not to miss the sunset and sunrise over the plains. I do not know if you hit the I80, but if you do, stop by Ogalla (spelling may be off teh target, but you will see). Sunrise over the lake is breathtaking. So is the sunset over the horizon. If possible, stop by Chimney Rock, kinda cool. Otherwise, just move to SD blackhills region. This place is good for some nice photo op, specially if you can get there in moonlit night. If you have time, don't forget to take a startrail shot, since these places are so much out of the reach of sodium vpour lamps. Never been to ND, so I am keeping my mouth shut here.
  7. Been there last year at teh same time. Crowd was there, but not as much as to irritate you as a photog. I think we stayed at a microtel inn near Zion (forgot the name of the town) and for Arches, yes, Moab is the place to stay. If budget allows, you can also stay at bred&breakfast lodge in Zion. I don't have the phone number of the guy handy, but I can get you if you wish so. It's about 250 bucks per night but you will really love the place. BTW, you may want to cut a day from Bryce and add that up in favor of Arches/Canyonland.
  8. Thanks guys! Unfortunately, due to visa restrictions I am basically stuck at the American side of the falls. So, tell me the best place where I can get teh best pano view of the falls from this side? I think my camera will be under my wrapped bag during the close encounters! Heck, 20D is no where close to F4's. I just want to play safe here. Also, is there any sweetspot close to the falls from where I can take a closeup without drenching my gear? I have a all weather proof bag, so at least I am safe when not taking a pic.
