I think the colors in the upper and lower half don't go together - the upper half is warm with the setting (rising) sun. The lower half is too cool with the overall blue/cyan tint. And it doesn't go together well. Play with the color balance for the lower half, get rid of most of blue cast. Then it will be a good and interesting photo...

Please, view the image larger. Even then, it does not justifythe image enough, as it is from a 6x12cm negative. There is enoughdetail in every single white petal on the flowers, the yellow tip ofthe flower is in the large print, but on in the web version...

Michel, thanks for your kind words. But especially the bright patch of grass on the right and the ground just behind the cliff are overexposed. It's not apparent from this small web-sized version, but as I have looked at the larger scan, they do lack the amount of texture (and tonal differences) that are present in the rest of the photo. And it is not possible to remedy it with local burning - that would only darken the areas, not bring back the tonal differences. I have tried to scan the negative several times, but the information is not on the film itself (my conclusion).
But anyway, it may pass this way, as the overexposed areas are not large and the brain will fill in the necessary info - it's clear what should be there...
Btw., when I showed this photo to my wife, she said that it was really nice. Than she asked whose photo it was, if I can show her some other photos by that author. When I told her it was mine, she at first didn't believe me... (yeah, than she gave me a kiss ;) ) That much for the support of the close-ones...

Thanks Pedro, The rocks and grass (on the right) are overexposed a bit (they both lack the amount of details and texture I would love to have) even though I have used a ND grad filter (I don't remember the strength of the one used). The other think is the use of negative film (should have more latitude than positive) and self-development...

This is one of the last shots of a last roll exposed on a day withrather bad beginning and excellent end (photographically). It's toaccompany previous photos, Clearingfog and Clearingfog II, where you can also find the story explainingthem...

(for the first part - and the introduction - please go to the http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=6009513&size=lg">previousphoto) We moved about a kilometer further and a beautiful view ofa valley full of low fog opened. And the rays of sun were justperfect...
Thanks for your time looking, Jiri

In the morning of that day, I set out for a shooting trip with myfriend. It was very misty, the place (valley) we chose to photographwas not a success, we were not satisfied. On the way home the fogstarted to clear, rays of strong sun started playing on the frost...We had to stop and make up for the failure of the morning. We shot allthe film we had (around 10 rolls of film together) and the pleasure ofphotographing was extraordinary. In the end, even some nice picturesresulted...

Years ago when I started shooting with a Pentacon MF camera, I hadgreat difficulty composing into a square. Now I find it very nice andsometimes even compose for cropping when shooting large format - as isthe case here. And again (as with the http://www.photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=5948560&size=lg">previousversion, Rocks and water the smoothness and level of details inthe 9x9cm frame is wonderful...

Michelle, thanks a lot.
I can't compare 4x5 and top of the line DSLR, I can only compare it to an old Konica-Minolta A200 (this is bad) and my brother-in-laws Canon 350D (better, but still worse than 4x5. He even considers it worse than his 6x9 Fuji rangefinder and also 6x7 Mamyia). The cost of 4x5 is not that high, on the contrary if you choose carefully. And if you shoot BW, I pay less than approx. 0.5USD per shot (film + self development) here in the Czech republic. If you want further info, don't hesitate to contact me offline through email. I'll be happy to answer.

I really love the details and smoothness of tones in this 9x12cm sheetfilm shot. To me this is exactly why people take the path to yetlarger and larger film sizes. And I'm still at the beginning (with9x12cm/4x5")...

This is my grandmother captured last Christmas. I really like thisportrait because of the joy and spark in her eyes, a flashback of thepast. I know that the open (toothless) mouth is not very flattering(on the contrary), but I still like it a lot. And she's now verydifficult to work with, similar to a small child; so her open mouthcould be attributed to her (almost prehistoric) age. (She was lookingat her great-granddaughter in the arms of my mother - a family union -and that made her so happy...)
What do you say, is the open mouth so un-flattering I should notpresent this shot? Thanks for your time... Jiri

The exposure is excellent IMO, very well presented...

I'm glad that you, Candy and Peter, find the image worth noting.
Peter, when I was composing the image, I was thinking of moving the stalk away (I moved quite a lot of them anyway :), but in the end I decided it would add more depth to the image, breaking the lines of the leafless branches... To me it has more layers this way... But thanks anyway for your idea. (I went to this place to take some photos with my brother-in-law, and we don't have any single photo that is "same". Even if we see the same theme, we present it differently. And that is nice, differences similar to your note...)

from an outing in last december. Wanted to shoot some winter scenes, but the weather was not cooperative :-) I'm not 100% sure it's worthpresenting, but I like it anyway... What do you think? Do you like itor not?
Thanks for your time, Jiri

Thanks Peter. Yes, it was shot on an overcast day indeed, no polarizer used, just a Cokin Red filter. And the contrast was not that terrible, the rocks were more like dull gray than white, but I tried to move them to white, while keeping the water (and the riverbed) dark...
Thanks again, Jiri

Thanks Peter. Judging BW photos on a computer screen is difficult without proper monitor calibration (and mine is not calibrated precisely), but as I see it (and as I want it), there are subtle rocks below the surface. But I wanted them to be dark, not to disturb the main theme of the tree bright groups of plants. The texture in the foreground is to be visible when you start exploring the rest of the photo, when you have enough of the plants... :-)
Hopefully it will be much clear in a print (which is yet to come)
