1.
Try and shoot a person (whole body) using your 50mm 1.8 @ f/2 in an open field (far background) with your 500D and i'm sure you'll like the effect .
I don't think you have to buy another lens unless you'd wanna try the 85mm 1.8 which is a fantastic lens , and affordable too. And you can also use that to shoot Hockey or Basketball even w/o flash .. anyways , enjoy what you have at the moment and keep shootin and experimenting coz you get to check the results right away w/o having to take your film to the lab . (not like years ago). PC

  2.
I too miss the ECF that's why i still keep two EOS 5's , one with ECF calibrated for my wife's eye and one for me . I sold my EOS 3 years ago to purchase my first digital SLR the D30 .
Yeah , i would get the EOS 3 , but then again i guess you're comfortable with the A2 , but as the other poster adviced , get the EOS 5 instead , it's got fantastic ECF that really works wonders ..Good Luck Huntin' , PC

  3.
just bought a 1D Mkll and i really enjoy shooting with it . I come from shooting film and my first digital was an EOS D30 then 30D , now this is my third Canon Digital EOS , and IMO is the best and fastest focusing camera body i've ever had and i'm really happy i bought it.
also i'm not interested with EOS bodies that shoot HD movies, if ever i would have the need to shoot HD, i will buy a Video Cam designated for that purpose that shoots HD Vids .. PC

  4.
well Guys , it's now 2011 and still no ECF even on Canon EOS 1 series DSLRs . I miss it too , it worked well for me 5 yrs ago , that's why i still have 2 EOS 5 bodies that i still get to shoot once in a while and get to use ECF that i've calibrated one for my eye and the other one for my wife. Maybe Canon will have ECF on the next 5D3 ? just Maybe ,, Paul

still got my Rollei 35SE ,and it still a great shooter, in fact it's 2nd best to my Zeiss Contessa as my favorite pocketable, carry anywhere camera . I never use the light meters on these cameras, i just rely on my own judgement of lighting situations whenever i shoot with both.
I took the battery off of my Rollei , the light meter still works , but i don't think 35-50yr old cameras like these would still have accurate light meters (unless you have them calibrated/changed ) so i just rely on my own judgement , and it produces great results.
I advice you to have your Rollei checked by a trusted tech to avoid further damage and enhance shooting/enjoying this little GEM . PC
