  1. Hi Andrew: I was there this year on May 5th aboard the "ms Rotterdam" when we called at the Port of Roseau, Dominica for a full days visit. We had full access to the city and we noted absolutely nothing that was threatening in any way; quite the contrary, the people was very friendly and interested in us. We saw no cigar manufacturing but there were plenty of stores that sold the products of both the Domincan Republic and Cuba. Prices for the two were comparable and I bought a few to bring back. They had plenty of Heineken at the many waterfront bars and restaurants at about US$2.00 per bottle; US money, incidentally, was widely accepted. It was very interesting and I'm sure that you will enjoy your visit. Have fun! Regards, Bill
  2. Hi Andrew: I just returned from a visit to the Port of Roseau, Dominica. We were aboard the "Rotterdam" and the call was for a full day. We didn't venture out of the port city but there was nothing noted that was threatening in any way. The people were very friendly and interested in their visitors. We saw no cigar manufacture but there were pleanty being sold! I bought some from Havana and some from DR and the prices were comparable. They also seemed to have a good stock of Heineken in the waterfront bars at a good price -- about $2.00 and US moiney was accepted without question. It was HOT! You'll enjoy it. Have a Good Time, Bill
  3. Hi Peter: Don't ever kid yourself for a minute into believing the spam that el Nikkor enlarging lenses are not in the running: Quite the contrary, they are the best and at prices that don't out-Leica Leica! Keep in mind that you are essentially reading a flat surface and projecting onto a parallel flat surface -- so why the need for all the fancy corrections (if they really exist?). Good Luck with your elNikkor 50mm-f.2.8 lens. Bill
  4. Hi Mark: I have a Optisches NahelInstellgerat NOOKY/HESUM device that the instructions state, "The optical near-focusing device is supplied in two models, namely, for the ELMAR 50mm. f3.5 lens and the SUMMITAR 50mm. f2 lens. The latter can also be used for the old types SUMMAR 50mm f.2 and HEKTOR 50mm f.2.5 lenses." It goes on to say, "Optical near Focusing Device, chromium plated for ELMAR 50mm........NOOKY" and "Optical near Focusing Device, chromium plated, for SUMMITAR 50mm (SUMMAR or HEKTOR 50mm)........NOOKY-HESUM".

If you want to try it out with your HEKTOR, I'd be happy to send it to you for a test. Bill Carson, La Conner, Washington (360) 466-3823

  6. Hi Dave: I take strong exception to your reference to the plastic shade furnished as OEM with the Summilux 35mm-f.1.4 ASPH Leica lens. This shape is much more effective than the round design and it takes the knocks, etc. much better. Count your blessings ----. Regards, Bill
  7. Hi Leica Experts:

I recently sold a Leitz 135mm-f.4.0 Tele-Elmar via eBay. The lens is

in unusually good condition - a real solid Mint. I checked it out

100% prior to shipping and it was AOK.

I packed it very carefully -- and adequately. I have been advised

that the lens will not "click" in place when mounted on an M mount

camera. It will rotate but does not click and becomes disconnedted

when the focusing mount is rotated. This is a new one to me and there

much be a simple explanation as the shipping box etc. showed no

    damage.

Any ideas as to what might cause such a problem? Thanks for your

    advice. Bill Carson

  8. Hi Joe: I want to add my two cents worth because I have used and have been delighted with Leitz/Leica's close-up devices from the different FocusSlides (including the D. Paul Shull produucts)to the various VisoFlexs. They work great either hand held or tripod mounted and in summary, they offer excellent tools for long focus and close-up work. Don't kid yourself that they are diffult to work with; they are simple, acccurate and relatively inexpensive (if you can find the components that you need!). 10. Hi Lyle: Here is the stuff that I used on east African safari in the early 1970s: Nikon F-2 w/Motor Drive, 500mm-f.5.0 Mirror Reflex, 80~200mm-f.4.5 Zoom and, as always, the 55mm - f.3.5 Micro Nikkor. A medium yellow filter for each lens and nothing but large quantities of TRI-X for B&W and Ektachrome 200 for color. An extra body would have been handy to have many times with the 500 on one camera and the 80~200 on the other. Good Luck and stay away from the Tse-Tse Flys! Bill Carson
