i can't comment on CaptureOne, but i think NX2, ViewNX is by far better than ACR, LR, PS when it comes to handling NEFs.

are you going to end up choosing one of the three - if so, which one and why.

i notice the photo is on flickr... give picnik a shot, it should be under the options as *edit* right above the image and click on *auto fix* ( i think that's what it's called ), it may just help with the issues described above.

if you haven't already tried Costco... you really should. hi end machines and color profiles all for a price that's a great value. i've tried some of the other places mentioned - just didn't care for the additional shipping time/cost to already a bit pricey, imo, prints.
i'm no pro, but do want and appreciate high quality prints - i was more than pleasantly surprised by the Costco experience - the color profiles were a bonus.

great link... thanks much for sharing Ellis.

is that info contained in the exif for the dslrs - if so, how can it be viewed?
i don't mean focal length info.

Chris... if you like the RAW conversion the Nikon software delivers (which a lot of folks prefer over ACR), consider using ViewNX - which is free and still from Nikon.
well worth a look.
i'm using NX2 for 90% of all the post processing i do but will admit that the interface and features that i came across in the trial of LR2 i used are quite slick.

Rainer...
i just tried PTLens, i'm thoroughly impressed with what it can do and at how simple it was. excellent suggestion.

thanks Robert... that's exactly what i ended up doing and then decreasing the opacity a bit to make a bit more natural.
thanks for the feedback folks.

based on what is written in the photographer's blog... there's more than a handful of applications that are used that either correct - or enhance the photos posted.
i seriously doubt that the image posted is straight off the CF card.

what's the best way to find a neutral gray point in to correct a color cast in skin tone.
i've got an image with not obvious whites or anything close to 18% gray in it. determining black and white
points isn't too tough, it's finding that midpoint that i'm having trouble with.

I use the "Ozone System". I underexpose the photograph and then use "Highlight/Shadow" in Photoshop to bring out
the details in the darker areas.

i'd suggest using a Nikon product to handle the intial NEF, ViewNX is free and can do a basic conversion and still do a better job of handling color than ACR imo. you can handle metadata if you like too with it. it's pretty basic but not a bad way to integrate in your workflow which seems to oriented mainly around CS2 anyhow.
congratulations on the D700, seems like a monster camera.
