Thanks. I think in many ways color presents more of a challenge, and Eggeleston is certainly a great role model. I think I'll always love black and white, but I'd sure like to have some color work to complement it- maybe soon. It's well enough to have gotten something from your work, that's plenty fine by me.
  1. This photograph shows the chef of the train, taking a break from duties, sticking his face out into the warm moist air as we entered a tunnel, somewhere in the western Mexican tropics. My girlfriend and I were on a 36 hour run from Mexicali to Guadalajara, a trip that cost next to nothing. The train was a World War II vintage American hand-me-down. We had an "air conditioned" sleeping compartment, which was more like a sealed oven. Much of our time was spent in the open air between the cars, barely able to hear each other at a shout, looking out as the landscape passed in front of us. By the end of the day my white T-shirt had turned black from soot, grime, and sweat.

I'll never forget too looking out from the train into the night at a several mile stretch of fireflies to the side of us, like witnessing magic...

This photograph was taken in 1981, and I made the trip again in '84.. I've read recently that the railway routes in the country have either ceased to run, or are in steep decline. After scanning some of the negs I haven't seen for so long, I'm itching to go back, nevertheless.

  2. That jet black form against the grey tones is way too nice to call it ordinary I think, Andrew. Seems to be sort of a trademark for Beau that he's got working in a couple other shots as well.

Exquisite! I love the simplicity of this, and how there's really no reference as to how you took it. EXTREMELY Powerful image.

Beau, I'd trade you anything you find of interest in my portfolio for a print of this.

Nice what the light does to show the texture of the paper. Sensitive handling and seeing. Nice composition and content again with this subject. I really like a few of these you shot of the scroll.

Composition, negative and positive space, lighting, and content all work very nicely together. I'm not sure why this photo has been rated so lowly by previous people, I think they're not seeing it.

Very nice. Looks surreal. The one thing I'm asking myself concerns the leaves. Looks as if they were placed there, but maybe they just stand out because of the contrast with the blur. I still like it, regardless.

It gave me a laugh. Thanks for posting.

...Hmm, that's strange. When posting the above comment a couple months ago I didn't even see that the fellow appears to be homeless. Perhaps not so funny after all.

I like the shot as you have cropped it, but wonder if it could use just a tad more space on the bottom and left, in which case you could still retain your proportion. It's a great shot in any case. I personally wouldn't manipulate the image other ways, I tend to think photographs lose integrity that way, especially an action shot like this.
