  1. Schneider-Kreunznach 120mm, f5.6 HM -

I recently purchased this lens on Ebay, and received it without any lens caps

or filters. I was hoping to purchase on line asap some lens covers and a

couple of filters, but could not be sure of the size. If you actually own one,

could you confirm for me the filter size, and the size of the rear lens for a

slip on cap? I communicated with a rep at Schneider who said the lens filter

size is 67mm, but it's definately not.

I already own a few 67mm filters for my 645 and they are obviously too big for

this lens. My guess is that it's about a 62mm, but I don't own calipers, live

in a small town with no large chain to go to to try on filters, and was hoping

to order one asap before certain spring conditions dissapear in my area. I

told the rep at Schneider, and he really couldn't tell me much other than it

doesn't match his "fact sheet". Thanks for any help given.

  2. Kelly, Up in Crawford Notch and Twin Mountain on Rte 302 this morning. The tops of the notches are almost peak (Crawford, Pinkham and Franconia Notch are all nice spots for photography). I haven't been up on the Kanc this week, but it usually runs pretty close to the top of the notches. Everywhere, it's about a week late. The valley here (Bartlett) is probably still a week away as colors are just barely starting. And yes, if you don't have a reservation at this point, you likely will not find a a room. I see people every year that sleep in their cars or drive back home at midnight after looking at a 100 No Vacancy signs. Next weekend in the valleys will be much better, yet the high elevation color may be gone by.

  3. Gary, humid here in New Hamshire too. Same problem. If possible, I try to let them dry 5 days or more between sheets of paper and the problem goes away. FYI, for me, drymounting did NOT solve it for prints that had not dried properly-still got the outgassing fog occaisonally. Also, I find it much worse when printing at 2880 than 1440 (twice the ink-twice the time). Good luck.

  4. I'm guessing you've already tried turning it off and disconnecting it from the computer and then rebooting it. This has happend to me before and this did the trick. Also, someone wiser than me told me it's not the best idea to max out your external HD to the final mb. He said it's good practice to stop filling it when you get above 90% full. I can't confirm it, but the guys a tech wizard and memory is cheap. Better safe than sorry. Best of luck.

  5. Thank you all for your answers. I totally agree regarding carbon fiber, as you can see in my post I already own one that I use for day hikes. Yes, I do both, but this post is for when I'm hiking to photograph, and yes every pound counts, especially when you're doing overnight hikes, and your pack is already in the 50lb range, and your back isn't what it used to be. Again, greatly appreciate the input!
  6. I've been reading some recent posts and looking up tripod info to purchase a

new one. I currently own a Gitzo 1348 Cf that's terrific for minimal hiking,

but a bit big and heavy for 8-10 mile overnight hikes. I rarely use a larger

lens than a 105 on my Pro TL. I was looking at the G1228 and G1227, and also

the Feiso 3401. I was hoping to actually hear from someone who has a similar

camera system that has used one of these lighter tripods. Stable enough?

    Thanks for your input.

  7. James, You can certainly make your trip from Montreal to NB, by travelling through some of the most beautiful and most photographed areas in the country during fall foliage, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Some great scenery in the Quebec Eastern Townships along the way too. You can see alot of it on my web site if you want to get an idea. I have to agree about the foliage, no gauantee on timing or quality, it's like trying to predict the weather a month away. Typically, around here the peak in higher elevations starts early October, and the lower elevations around mid October, but that can vary greatly when you're trying to plan a vacation around it. Best of luck!

  8. This problem occurs often with my landscape images including deep colored skies and the edge of mountains. I copy the image and sharpen the bottom layer as much as I can without the halo showing up. I then sharpen the top layer how I want it for the image, put a layer mask on the top sharp image and use a small paintbrush at a reduced setting to paint away the halo.
  9. Well yes, there is a lot of unnecessary information in there. Do you really want to address your letter to the photo editor "John Doe", and find out he got canned or quit last year. Is it worth $25 to ensure putting your best foot forward? My dad always said "you never get a second chance to make a first impression", so make your first one count.

  10. With just two weeks, I would really focus on just one island. Even then, you'll have a very difficult time seeing all you want to see. My wife and I spent three weeks circumnavigating the South Island, and really felt we needed a couple more weeks to see what we wanted. The lakes region / Wanaka area was our favorite. Here's some images from our trip:
