    I'm only pointing out that if you have difficulty in getting a scan right, a way you can prove if the neg or slide is problematic, and maybe not your attempts, by scanning in Basic mode which will sort out all the adjustments automatically without you doing a thing. Now, if Basic can't come up with a good scan, practically nothing will. Which mode are you using to do your scans ? Professional mode can leave you a bit bewildered at times, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't use it.

     

    Anyway, it seems you've solved the problem of getting the preview to match the scans and not looking like they went through a stocking, more power to you and keep practicing with those settings, that's the answer.

  2. I should have figured this out earlier but did not. After posting the above I went back to Vuescan on the screen and started experimenting with different settings . I had done this earlier but had not changed my whitepoint setting which had been at 1 for a long time. Increasing this to 3-3.5 made a world of difference. The previews were now bright and clear as were the scans. Problem solved, I hope. I have tens of thousands of negatives and slides dating back to the late 1940's and I plod along trying to scan as many as I can in the brief time I have left. Thanks.[ATTACH=full]1388168[/ATTACH]

    Not just Vuescan, which I still use sometimes, but scanning software in general is very sensitive to changing the parameters- and these often have to be reset when upgrades come along.

     

    I mostly use the old Nikon software (re-animated on my older machine that serves the CoolScan), but it took quite a while to find the 'right' settings again.

     

    Was that Kodachrome for Ike?

    Yes, the film was Kodachrome and it still looks as good today as when I took the photo almost 70 years ago. The Des Moines was on her rotation as the Sixth Fleet flagship in the Med on her 1951-52 Cruise. We had one or more Midway class carriers and Ike, who at that time was Commander of SHAPE came aboard one night in the Bay of Naples in order to observe Sixth Fleet air maneuvers. I was a fire controlman in the FOX division, working in the 3In50 repair gang and was assigned to a Ford Instrument computer in the plotting room for the 5 inch guns for general quarters.

     

    We pulled out about 5 am the next morning and soon ran into very heavy seas. The FOX division was quartered just below the mess deck and soon the sound of mess tables and garbage cans sliding around above was heard. The seas got so heavy that few if any sailors were allowed topside. This went on all day and also the following day. Only the members of the crew needed on the bridge were moving about. It was impossible to hold air maneuvers when large ships were pitching and yawing so much.

     

    Finally on the third day out the weather had cleared and we found ourselves just off the coast of Southern France. This was the first time that most of us had seen Ike. He was preparing to leave the ship on our helicopter. I climbed up into the superstructure and took a few photos of his departure. He was donning a life jacket, the Marines were at attention near him and by custom, 8 sailors as sideboys were preparing to send him off.

     

    I took a number of rolls of film on that cruise and when we departed Gibraltar at the end of the cruise I sold the Argus C3 to my hometown buddy that I had talked to elisting with me in Sept. of 1950. He and all other snipe strikers were assigned to the USS Preston , a 2100 class destroyer just being recommissioned in Long Beach, The Preston was in the fleet that relieved us. He died a dew weeks ago, still owning that Argus C3. I miss him

     

    On our return voyage Our division officer told us that the USS Missouri was going to return to Korea in the fall and that it needed Fire Controlmen. Three of us volunteered to transfer and so after seeing Europe I had a chance to see Asia. The next two years were quite eventful.

I have been using Vuescan to scan slide film and color negs with a Coolscan V for many years with great effect. recently, however, with the latest updates I am experiencing problems with the color negs, The preview starts out very good, bright and clear, and then when it ends the image is darker and looks as if the image has been shot through a nylon stocking, or similar filter. The scan is also dark and hazy. I cranked up another computer with a Vuescan program from 2018 and the previews and scans were as they should be. Is this a problem for anyone else? The Vuescan updates are 64.9.7.53 and 64.9.7.54 and 64.9.7.52 as well.
  5. I have scanned many thousands of slides and/ or positive film without seeing this effect. The finished scan has always been the same as the saved image.I have also scanned in many color negatives over the years without experiencing this problem. For many years I traveled with a couple of 35mm cameras as well as 3 medium format cameras and I took negs and slides with the 35mm cameras and I used positive and negative film in the medium format cameras- color and B&W.. I developed my own film and placed the film in plastic film holders. Using Vuescan in both flatbed and 35mm scanners I was always able to get great results.

     

    Vuescan has been great with frequent updates as new technologies have changed and have been incorporated into the program. Could one or more of these updates have affected the color scans that I am now getting? I would not thinks so but a recent Windows 10 update has really affected the WIFI in all my Dell laptops.

    Now everytime I turn one on the WIFI adapter has to be reset. Very strange. Then too am I not setting up Vuescan for color negatives correctly? I have tried changing some of the inputs with no success. Again, the preview color is fine but when the final scan is saved the colors are muted and the photo is hazy.

  6. I agree that it's probably a colour-space issue, but if it's only happening with colour negatives and not transparencies, that's a bit strange.

     

    I'd also check the 'advanced' tab in Vuescan. There might be some additional adjustments set that aren't at their default position.

     

    Also, crop the preview down to exclude any surrounding black border. Vuescan does a similar thing to PS 'autocolour' and takes the whole scanned area into account unless cropped.

  7. I have been using Vuescan to scan my negs and slides for quite some time with great success. However I have run into a problem recently when scanning Fuji and Kodak color negs. I am scanning the negs with a Nikon Coolscan V with a desktop using Windows 10. When previewing the negs the colors are fine but when I then scan the negs the colors in the final scan to be saved are very muted and the photo looks as if there is a gray haze over it when it is saved by Irfanview.

     

    Then when I open the photo in Photoshop CC 2020 and click on Auto Color the colors are restored and the haze is gone.

    What is happening to the image between the preview scan and the final scan?

  8. Since nozzle check run from the printer itself fails, that eliminates the computer, drivers, USB cables, etc. The problem is in the printer itself.

     

    I assume you powered the printer down and restarted it as part of these tests. If not, please do so. This reboots the printer.

     

    Next put your regular paper in and try running the nozzle test again. Does it work? If not, you have a broken printer. If it does, then the problem is in the printer/paper combination.

  9. My SC P800 was working perfectly last week making 11x17 color prints. Friday I received a new box of Canson Baryta II and I was eager to try it. I went down into my darkroom, loaded a photo on my computer in Photoshop CC, and directed it to print on the P800.

    (I am using Windows 10 and the printer was connected by USB cable.) The printer went through all the motions and sounds of printing.

    When I checked the print the page was blank. I repeated the process but the paper was always blank. I then directed the machine to do a nozzle check and then print the results from the controls on the printer- no USB or computer involved. Same results- blank paper.

     

    I have tried everything I know to resolve this issue including downloading new drivers, changing computers, replacing the maintenance

    cartridge, checking the ink cartridges which were all 3/4 full.

     

    Any suggestions?

  10. I am having problems loading 11x17 sheets of Hahnemuhle Photo Rag matte paper. I usually load similar papers using the rear loader with minimum problems but the printer will not accept the Hahnemuhle Photo Rag matte. The error warning keeps telling me to reload the paper no matter how many times I try. The printer will not grab the paper and feed it through. Compared to the Epson Hot Press papers the Photo Rag feels much softer and more pliable. Is this the problem?
  11. Doesn't kick out prints on this end, IF the tray is fully extended out.

    Not only fully extended but, at the suggestion of another who had the problem, I added an empty box under the sheet as it came out to maintain a level exit of the sheet.

    Lots of printers have commented on the problem but no remedy yet that fixes the kick-out problem with my machine which is about a year old. My problem is with the 11x17 sheets.

  12. <p>I am now experiencing a strong magenta cast in the CS5 Preview and on the print where there was no cast on the original screen image. I load the image on the screen from Irfanview and then open it up in CS5. I make whatever adjustments that are necessary and then click the print button. When the photo appears on the screen I indicate the printer in this case 3880 or sometimes the 2880, the color cast is the same regardless the printer. After making the proper settings on screen I click on Preview and see the color cast . I have tried many things to remove it without success. I cannot be the only one experiencing this so what have others found to deal with it. There was no problem at all until I switched from Win 7 to 'Win 10. Yet there must be lots of people printing successfully with Win 10. So any ideas? I will download four photos. The original on the screen.   13. <p>Thanks much for your responses. I have a 2880 and a newer 3880. I have printed about 25 color prints of various sizes on the 3880. I keep the cleaning cycles to a minimum and have not experienced any need to clean the 3880 but did inadvertently do so until I learned to keep my hands off the menu button on the printer. The reason why the printer would not print was that I needed to change the maintenance cartridge. I thought SOON was not meant to be right this minute but it was. I ordered a couple of cartridges from B&H, installed one and the printer worked fine except-<br>

    I am having a problem with a magenta color cast that is driving me crazy. All was great until Installed Windows 10 and the color changed- on both the 2880 and the 3880. I have installed the latest drivers for CS5, the printer and re-calibrated the monitor all to no avail. The color looks great on the screen but on the preview it is a hideous red. I have loaded a great many icc profiles and use them religiously but still the color cast. I let Photoshop manage the color with the installed profile. Still no luck. Any ideas?</p>
