  1. I have a strong feeling it isn't. A charged battery on my D70 will stay charged through weeks of non-use. And then I can still pick it up and shoot hundreds of images before I need to charge.

Other experiences may be different of course..... this is just mine.

  2. I'm using the D70 and slowly getting used to using the SB800

Speedlight. I have very little experience using flash, but I am

slowly learning and beginning to appreciate how good flash can be when

applied appropriately. I've always avoided using flash because I was

very initimidated by it (it just seemed terribly technical to learn),

and I never really cared for how bad it's effects can be on an image

    when done improperly.

Right now I'm using the D70 in manual exposure mode with flash mode

programmed for TTL, I then set the SB800 unit to TTL-BL and then

adjust the output in +/- 1/3 increments..... this seems to be working

    out rather well for me.

My question then (and it's pretty stupid I suppose) is this, am I

using the right custom mode on the D70? Should I be setting the

camera's custom flash mode to Manual? And if so at full power? I only

see explanations of the custom flash modes in relation to how they

    work with the onboard flash.

Another related question is in regards to the NEF file. I would like

to be able to see how much +/- compensation I used when taking an

image, but it would seem that I'm unable to read this info in Nikon

Capture. It will show which type of flash option, but it gets no more

    detailed than that.

Is there a way to have this information show, that I may be unaware of?

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

  3. Jpeg is a lossy format, which you probably knew. I always work in RAW and the only time I convert to jpeg is if my output is going to be to web, otherwise I stick with tiff or psd file formats.

The problem with jpeg be it in camera or in an image editing program is that some data gets tossed out during processing..... processing in camera takes all control out of your hands. So unless you need card space RAW is the best way to shoot.

How you choose to convert your raw data is up to you... my only thought here was that if you work on your images in jpeg after conversion and then save in jpeg again, and again, each time you are compressing and further degrading image quality. That's all I meant. :~)

  4. Nikon View is very limited in what it can do with NEF files..... it's best used as a browser, to tag and sort image prior to processing and converting. It works well used in conjunction with Nikon Capture.

As already said PhotoshopCS and Photoshop Elements 3 do come with a raw converter, but these are also limited, PSE3 even more so than PSCS.

I would recommend saving your images as tiff's, especially if you plan on working on them further in photoshop. Then when you are sure you are done working save a copy of the image as a jpeg. This prevents your original image from degradation and loss of image quality.

  5. Is it possible to change the distance range scale on the SB800 from

meters to feet? On my older, far less fancy SB27 I had the ability to

change this scale to feet from the metric system. If it's mentioned

in the manual I'm not finding it. And a search of these forums yields

    no answers.

I'd really like it if I didn't have to preform mathematical equations

to figure out if I'm in the proper distance range or not.

  6. I'm quite happy with my Sigma EX 105mm. Much of my work is macro, and I've used this lens with my D70 as well as my N90S..... Autofocus when working in close proximity to an object can be a challenge, and so I prefer manual focus. It's also worked well for me as a portrait lens.

It's my understand that the Sigma EX 105 is also new and improved.... I have the older model.

I have never used the Nikon 105 so I cannot compare the two. But I also know many other users of the Sigma lens who are also quite pleased with their investment.

  7. I've had my D-70 for a few months now but have admittedly not used it much, as I tend to prefer working with film and my N90S, so I have not had issues, and have been happy with the images I am getting out of it.... my question and this may be a stupid one.... what is back focus? I've never heard the term before.
  8. Well I put in a call to them on Monday the 7th of March.

The rebate was processed on February 24th, and was sitting on her desk, supposedly ready to go out in the mail the day of my phone call. Hmmmm..... isn't that a coincidence?

Didn't bother to ask because I know that I'd get a load of malarky, but why are rebate checks sitting on someone's desk for more than ten days after they're ready to be mailed? *shakes head*

Now it will probably take another 2 weeks to receive it in the mail?

  9. Forgive me if this is the wrong place to ask. I bought the Optix X-R

bundle from X-rite back at the end of December 2004 and promptly sent

my rebate requirements off to the company. Here it is heading into

the second week of March and I've not received a rebate check yet.

On their website I've been unable to find a place to check for rebate

status. I suppose I may have to put in a phone call, but I'm

wondering if anyone else has waited a long time for a check to come.

Maybe I just need to have a little more patience?

  10. Picture Project in my opinion is fairly useless software, I installed it and uninstalled it after 5 minutes of playing around with it. Nikon Capture is much better. And while the raw plug in available with CS is fairly good, and will do in a pinch, there are far more tools in Capture that give you the ability to fine tune your images over PSCS.
