I see what you mean now. There happens to be a link at the top of the page to http://www.imatest.com/ who offer a trial period on some software to measure this type of prblem - coincidence? Why don't you give it a go?

You've got a very narrow depth of field in this shot - are the eyebrows out of focus instead?

It may be worth while looking at Imatch which is a database program. It allows you to organise photos based on EXIF data etc. More importantly you can classify with any description you want such as location, activity, subject and so on. My snapshot collection has around eight thousand images built up over the last few years, and I managed to extract ten specific photos within five minutes for my wife based upon such detailed criteria as 'A family walk in the forest' or 'our son climbing'. I could never have done this with out a decent database program.

Press menu on the camera back.

Scroll down to the spanner icon.

move down the list to USB.

Move right and select the transfer mechanism you want to try.

 

Type M is mass storage where the camera acts as a new disk drive and type P is PTP where the camera identifies it self as such and the Window's Camera wizard kicks in.

 

There are no settings that need changed on the PC.

 

I'm not really sure if this will help solve your problem or not. If it doesn't, try buying a cheap USB 2.0 card reader and use that instead, as the camera is really slow at transfering information using its own USB port. Windows will just treat this as an additional disk drive and allow you to move your pictures as you would any other files.

I was surprised to see an Ad at the top of a page offering Photoshop

CS for $50ish. I know it can't be genuine but I thought I'd take a

look to see how that site is getting around the legalities of the issue.

 

If this offer isn't legal then should Photo.net request that Google

Have you tried changing the USB menu setting fom M (Mass storage) to P (PTP) or vice versa to see if that makes any difference?

Your sister has just gone to Japan from Germany. Maybe she is still too excited to worry about taking photos? My brother went to Australia to live three years ago and I'm still waiting for the first shots! However he isn't a photographer and taking photos is unimportant to him.

 

As you said yourself "(she should) use her money to do as many things as possible there ... than ... turning down an opportunity for a great weekend trip."

 

Give her another few months for the novelty of a new country and culture to wear off and then you may get some photos, unless of course she does find more exciting things to do. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for your sister and you don't want to ruin the experience for her by moaning to her about a lack of emails and photos the entire time.

I've searched the online knowledge base at Nikon Europe and can only find error codes FEE (Lens not fitted correctly) and REM(?) (all numbers used up). Why don't you email Nikon Tchnical Support?

I've looked at the article as well, and most of the images look virtually identical to me... I think your main choice comes down to which sort of glass you want to buy. To photograph distant deer by moon light etc you're going to need a fast telephoto lens and as both bodies have very little to distinguish them you may be better off comparing available lenses than bodies.

I read about this in a UK photo magazine as well. What on earth is the point of single use memory cards?

Pressing the shutter also puts the camera in shooting mode. You have to press the top button on the back (triangle >) to get into play mode and then you can press the chequered button.

 

Same problem also occurs while trying to change focus point. If an image is displayed on the LCD you have to press the shutter button half way to enter shooting mode so that you can move the focus point. I've missed several shots because of auto image display so I'd recommend switching off the automatic preview unless you really need it.

Just checked, because lenses come with caps scratch damage is not covered, so it must be a standard feature.

I'm insured with E & L insurance - leaflets in most magazines or www.eandl.co.uk. Scratching is excluded but I'm not sure if this covers lens damage - I'll need to check.

I haven't seen this because my camera stores the files with a .nef and .jpg extension. Try using explorer to check the file extensions (if using Windows) on the camera to confirm that it is generating the .nef file. If not you may have a faulty camera?

The update mechanism seems to only work with CF cards and not microdrives. Luckily (?) I have an old 16MB card lying around.

It seems to be broken again then. The direct link to http://www.photo.net/users/rps-atlantic.org works, but http://www-rps-atlantic.org brings up a DNS error. (20:30 GMT 27/6/04)

Isn't this what happens with electronic 'shutters' anyway? If not then how do electronic shutters work?

There is one strange thing though, more large images can be stored in the buffer than medium sized images. Does any one have any idea why?

You WILL have to pay tax and import duty on the full amount including shipping so remember to add that into the calculation as well.

I'm not sure that I'm answering your question, but one way to find out how many frames are stored on a memory card is to look at a picture using the play button. It displays the frame number and total number of frames stored. If you are after the total number the camera has ever taken then I've no idea!

There is a download section on the <a href=www.nikon.co.uk>UK Nikon web site</a> (www.nikon.co.uk) in the <a href=http://www.nikon.co.uk/customer_services/>Customer Care section</a>. The problem is you have to register with Nikon to gain access quoting your camera's serial number so you may not be able to access the file.
