Thanks everyone for the comments. I've scrutinized the slide under magnification and there seems to be a lot more detail in the shadow areas in the actual slide. I tried to make the digital representation of this image as close to the slide as possible, but I guess there are some limits to what I can achieve.

This is sort of a new area for me (well, honestly, all areas are new
areas for me). Some people would advise me to use a longer shutter
speed for this -- is that simply a matter of preference? Also, what
can I do (in the field) to counteract the strong blue cast in the photo?
Thanks for any comments

I think it IS well found and well executed. Perfect composition and interesting subject matter.
The only thing that bothers me is the digital representation of your image (which is originally on film). I think taking care in this step can be easily neglected, but when you are presenting your image in a digital showroom, its quality as a "digital image" should also be evaluated. Specifically, I think the compression artifacts, blurring, and (un?)sharpening are distracting and were, quite honestly, the first things I noticed about this image.
Other than that, congratulations on a great photo.

interesting choice of film for this situation, but it obviously worked for you. i absolutely love this photo. the birds are so elegant in their dance and your exposure is the spot on!

gorgeous dogs. i love the eyes. the tonality is fantastic (and i understand it is difficult to achieve with dark coated animals). i have two dachshunds at home, but not longhairs like these.
congrats

brilliant colors and lovely concept. i wish the scan were a bit better - it seems oversharpened somewhat.

I'm wondering if you think this is too dark or not. I was going for
the "moody" look so I purposely underexposed slightly -- do you think
it works? Any comments concerning composition are also highly
appreciated.
