I have a 40mm f1.4 lens by Voigtlander and it's a great optic. For only about $350 you get a decent all 'round lens. I don't think this lens will replace a 50mm focal length for me on my MP, but it does put my desire for a 35mm 'lux or 'cron waaaay on the back burner.
AND...because of the significantly lower cost of this lens, if you decide that it's not wide enough, or that you'd prefer the $50, it's not a huge tragedy. Certainly not the financial impact of either the 35 or 50 Summilux lenses.

Thanks for the heads up. Kyle was active here for a while and on the LUG as well. The book looks interesting...Not sure how much I like Drew's idea of relief when dropping "a clip into the air". All of the commentary on the web site is interesting.

I just purchased a used Hasselblad 501cm kit. It inluded a booklet with
illustrations, but the second booklet with all the text wasn't included. Does
anyone know if there's a pdf document available for download?
Thanks!

I'm selling off a few things now because I realized that my best work (just personal stuff) was shot with one body and one lens. I'm not paring down to one lens, but a much simpler kit in any case.
One 35mm RF body and a 35/40, 50, 75/90 combo should do nicely.

I went to an Apple store and hooked my MacBook to a 23" ACD and it ran fine. It didn't like running the native resolution 1200x800 on it's own display though. Overall it seemed to work fine.
Then I opened Photoshop and some 200MB 16Bit film scans (TiFF files) and it slowed to a crawl. Even with 2GB or Ram I don't think it would be fast enough for me to work without getting a little frustrated.
So, I think I'll wait and upgrade to a Mac Pro tower and larger display sometime next year.
Thanks for the feedback.

I'd like to get a larger display. I currently own a Mac Powerbook G4 (17"
1.33Ghz) and a MacBook (Core 2 Duo 2.0Ghz).
Is anyone running a 23" Apple Cinema Display with either of these machines? How
is it working?
I'd use the setup for Painter X, Photoshop CS2 (until I upgrade to CS3), etc.

No. You can darken a blue sky in Photoshop. You can mimic the effect of red and yellow filters in Photoshop. You can not cut glare and haze in photoshop like you can with a polarizer. Think reflections on water.

The documentary is called "WAR PHOTOGRAPHER", for those that are interested. It is available on Amazon.

Equipment is irrelevant when considering Nachtwey's work. It is astounding. I own a copy of "Inferno" and it is stunning in a terrible way. It's difficult to page through in one sitting.
I also have a DVD documentary on Nachtwey and he does indeed shoot Canon, both film and digital, when working.

I've had a 10D for three years and refuse to upgrade to another body with a cropped sensor. I hate the small sight picture. I also hate the focal length conversion, and more importantly, the change in DOF characteristics, when I use a different lens to approximate the equivalent full frame focal length (e.g. a 28 or 35 to give me somthing close to a standard 50). I prefer to shoot wide open much of the time. If you don't then it might not be as big a deal to you.
My two cents.

Thanks everyone!
The shutter curtain seems to be intact and it does fire when the shutter release is pressed. It is pretty gummed up. When you move knobs or adjust the lens, the lubricant feels 'thick'. There is a pretty huge dent on the "Ernst Leitz" inscription on the top plate. I'm not sure if that will affect focus.
I'm not planning on restoring it--it would be cost prohibitive for me.

I agree, this is a good POW thread. I've got nothing to add, unfortunately. :(

I shot with a Leica M6TTL for two years and it's a great camera. However, I sold it about 10 months ago because the majority of my recent stuff has been digital. Recently I got the itch for another rangefinder camera and Santa scratched that itch with an R3A and 40mm f1.4 classic VC lens.
Personally, I'm glad I chose this camera over an older M body. It was only $550 new, the lens costs less than $360, it has aperture priority with exposure compensation and an exposure lock button (that I believe the M7 lacks), and it's an overall great little package. Three rolls of film have gone through it so far and I'm very, very pleased. An MP it isn't, but for the price of one MP I could have bought 5 1/2 R3As. The M mount assures that I can purchase and use Leica glass without an adapter, which is a great feature as well.
For a shooters comparison I've noted the following:

-The M6TTL rangefinder patch seemed a little more contrasty

-I LOVE the 1:1 mag of the R3A

-The trigger lock on the R3A is convenient, and the metal shutter means I can walk around without my lenscap (and w/o paranoia about buring a hole in my shutter curtain)

-The M6TTL is noticeably quieter than the R3A, but the R3A is still pretty quiet compared to any SLR

-Build quality of the R3A remains to be determined as I've only had it about a week

-Shortly after I sold my M6, the new owner had the frame counter quit on him; other than that the M6 never stuttered in 2 1/2 years

As for lens choice: SERIOUSLY CONSIDER the 40mm f1.4 instead of the 35 and the 50. It's a sweet piece of glass and a great all around focal length! I think a 40 and a 75 or 90 is a great compact kit.

Keep the noct, give the rest to me to ease your mind. :)

Peter, if you dream "Part Deux", please share. Funny sh*t.

I had a bunch of Nikon stuff (N6006, FM2n, F5 + lenses) and I sold them to buy a Leica M6TTL and 50 'cron. I never regretted the move. It was a great camera and I loved the way it allowed me to shoot. I bought Canon digital gear and had the Leica as well for about 1 year. After that year, I sold the Leica because I wasn't using it very much, and I couldn't justify having several thousand bucks sitting on my shelf not getting used. I had the M6 and 'cron for 2 years total. I sold both on this forum, by the way.
I miss my Leica every now and then, but I'm having a hard time rationalizing the bang for the buck so it's highly unlikely that I'll buy more Leica M stuff.
If you have the fever, buy one. At least it will retain enough value that you can sell it without much loss if you don't like it or don't use it.

The bulk loader is SOLD!

The Easel and Schneider Lens are SOLD!

Jon, I'm not going to turn this into a flame fest. I deliberately didn't post the stuff in the
classifieds. I'm well aware of where they are. Thanks for your time. Did you want any of
this stuff? Send me an email. I don't usually respond to 'for sale' threads unless I'm
interested in buying stuff but maybe that's just me. Have a nice day.
-
Gerald, I get your point. I've got a Masters in Economics and am pretty clear on how
markets work. So, please spend your time on something else and stop cock-blocking my
efforts to sell my stuff. If you don't buy it, fine. If you got a different deal, fine. Go use
your stuff to take some decent pictures instead of invading a for sale thread in which are
listed items that do not interest you.
Thanks.
