Well, I mostly ie. 99% work in b&w - I consider color photography far more difficult, and I'm not there yet before taking color pics... one day may be... ;-) As for this picture b&w is I think more appropriate since the blending between the two "layers" operates better in b&w.

Thank you for your comment. What is your definition for a "true photo" ? As for me I believe we - people from western "civilizations" - tend to analyse things according to different criteria or levels and forget to grasp things as a whole. I would say the only important criterium about photo is simply the 'experience' people have when viewing at it and the sincerity/genuity of the author.

MS wrote "This is not high-concept, just cheap silliness--and not even that well done, in terms of framing, contrast, etc."

Thank you for your comment however I don't remember pretending this picture is "high-concept" as you say.

    ;-)

not that I do not want to answer your question but... let say that sometimes things are better left unanswered... I am quite happy your imagination worked full steam when looking at this picture. Would have it been the same if I had given full details...?

Thank you James for the painter's name. About the numbers, it's just the photo index number from my files which appears after the caption - not something I have a grasp on since it depends on PN html layout.

Thank you Christian for your comment. Actually I picked that photo after digging into negs from 2001 taken in NYC. You are right with camera level, I had to rotate the whole picture quite a bit :-( Conditions during the shot were not very good and today I'm not happy with many aspects of this picture. However I like the general feeling of it.

About digital manipulation, I like your idea, althought I prefer manipulating my pictures to a minimum level.

Thank you for taking the time to comment it.

  1. Taken at a signature/authograph session. The author was very playful but it was extremely difficult to catch his eyes (very fast look, almost never looking towards photographers). I like his books, I like the man.

Thank you Steve! The image you see is a scan from the negative. And yes it's true prints are much better and I seriously intend to scan prints rather than negatives.

Thank you Jason for your comment in French ! At first I did not imagine this picture would get some positive feedback. I went back to the darkroom, retrieved the negative and made a couple of prints. I must admit I managed to get a quite nice print showing much more details than the current scan, much better contrast too and realized there was a little something I underestimated into that picture before.

I will scan this print and see if it gets better than the current negative scan. If so I will post it here.

Thank you all for your comments.

  2. very creative approach ! I especially like the face's lines which blend with the stone layers. Convey a very oniric (does this word works in english ? I mean dreamy stuff) feeling. I enjoy it a lot !

Peter : actually I only have contrast problems on some very specific images (generally the ones with a broad spectrum of tones) where I mainly lose details around zone VII. I will post an example here or on the forum you mentioned.

    Merci beaucoup pour le commentaire.

Contrast - I know it is a problem... I intend to stop scanning from negs (minolta dimage II) and use a flatbed scanner on my prints. Wouldn't like too much to use photoshop.

Daniel - thank your for your nice comment - I did not use a tripod - available light (if I remember well it was mid-afternoon in summer) - I sometimes use a Nikon FM2 and I realize that my M4P or M6 Leica allows much slower speed than the FM2 without losing focus.
