  1. I wish I knew! First one went after only 6 months so that was covered but last weekend same thing happened again. I think I just got a lemon but Canon are not helping much. I have not even been using it that much lately 'cos I bought a TLR.

    Thanks for suggestions,

    James.

  2. So the second shutter has now gone in my 7e (in 2 years!) and Canon

want $140 to replace it. With the price of 7's these days it dosen't

seem to be worth it ($140 every 12-18 months will get old really

    quickly!).

With the price of used 3's and 1n's at the moment it looks like time

for an upgrade but which one?

Available light is about 95% of my photography and probably 65%/35%

BW/color with everything from stage to wildlife to F1 thrown into the mix.

Weight is not an issue (humping around logs and bags of fertilizer

tends to build muscle mass) but I can't figure out which is the best

buy for me, of course I really want a 1vhs etc but wife/bank

manager/everybody else might get a little testy.

So folks I await all your opinions with open wallet and freshly baited

breath as I place my 7e on the dead shelf along with the rebel 2000,

which, funnily enough also has a dead shutter!

    Hmmmmm maybe Nikon.........

  3. Has anyone got any info on this yet?

    Any problems with it?

I picked up a Seagull really cheap (check your local Barneys,

seriously!) and need a scanner mostly for proofing so $140.00 @B&H

    sounds good to me.

Any really good shots will be taken to my local pro store for the full

treatment (assuming there will be some!)

I have developed 1 roll of D 400 already and its sooo cool having such

    big negs!

So if any one has any thing to say on this subject I say

    BRING IT ON!

    Thanks in advance, folks,

    James.

  4. Whine, whine, whine. If you don't want to subscribe then don't but most people don't really want to know why.

Seems to me most of the whining is done by non subscribers so photo.net must be keeping the faithful happy.

To me this site is the best, most informative and at times the funniest photo site out there. In the last few years I have learned so much from here its unbelievable!

The photo.net elves rock, should be paid enron director type saleries and be made rulers of the photo world! (is my fawning obvious?).

Yes at times its sooooo slow but thats because not enough people will pony up the paltry subscription price so if you don't like it there are at least 2 choices:

    Sign up and help out

    or

    Buggar off!

Happy New Year to everyone especially all the elves and vote Lex for president.

  5. You could look out for a used 80-200 2.8 L on ebay (or here). An older but a wonderful piece of glass far beyond what you have mentioned, AF slightly slower than newer lenses but well worth $600 or so.

It was the best move I made in 2003 (apart from getting married! good job my wife won't read this!) and a friend used it very effectivly at my wedding(is giving up control of your shots that hard for everyone?).

It remains firmley attached to my Elan 7e and compliments the 28-105 and 50 1.8 wonderfully.

It is probably a little more than you want to spend and a little heavier than the the two you mention but the quality will blow you away and you will not regret it.

Happy New Year everyone, congrats to photo.net on 10 years and please subscribe!

  6. Try you local photo shop. I know my guy takes it for any customers for free (provided you are not bringing 55 gallon drums!)and he goes through so much stuff that 10-15 extra gallons will not make any difference to him. And as he says its much preferable to dumping it down the sink which should not be an option you explore. I'm trying (hard)not to turn this into a green rant but the loading of chemicals on the enviroment over the last 100 years is so huge that we need to be aware of everything we pour down the drain. I know everything is dilluted into trace amounts but that excuse has been used for far too long and now we see fish turning up with traces of antibiotics and anti depressants in their system. Got a cold? Eat a fish! Get cured, take in some Omega-3 and loose the blues at one sitting!
  7. I to went the sigma route a few years ago when starting out but have recently mended my ways! I purchased a Canon 80-200 2.8L about 6 weeks ago and it is a relavation! Even though they stopped making them 8-10 years ago it is an amazing lens and its black so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb! You can pick one up on ebay for around $550 to $650 and it is sooo worth it. The AF speed may not be quite as fast as the newer lenses but it should do for most applications.
  8. Practice! I started developing my own B&W films about 3 months ago (thanks for all the advice everyone)and ran into the same problems myself.

Just sit down with 3/4 rolls of crappy film and practice, practice, practice. After an hour or two you should be pretty good at it. Squeeze the film to give a slight curvature as you feed it onto the reels. Search the archives for just about any info you will need.

Its a really cool buzz seeing your own shots coming out of the rince bath! Enjoy!

  9. Thats the problem, Stephen, my lab guy hasen't been near the darkroom in 9 months! Too busy, roof caving in,no water etc. When he does get in there he is really good but he has about 20 films of mine sitting there for months. As I have a film scanner I just need the films developed and am trying to sift through the vast amounts of info out there. So I'm picking some (really good) brains.

    Thanks,James

  10. So I've finally made the decision to start developing my own B+W and

my tiny brain is begining to bubble and boil. I shoot about 50% Tmax

3200 the rest being Delta 400,Pan F 50 and Delta 100. I am about to

shell out my (few) hard earned dollars on all the stuff (SS

tanks, reels, changing bag blah blah blah) but I have no idea what

developer to use! So I thought to my self lets ask! So I'm asking!

Now I plan to average out the answers (which means I'll probably

start looking for something called Ilfomax or xphen -anyone try xlax?)

and some how I'll come to a decision. Any suggestions on stop

baths, fixers and wetting agents would also be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks a bunch folks

    James
