Jerusalem has many faces, this is one of them. A group of pilgrims from Eastern Europe. Thanks for viewing.

Pnina;

Another interesting slice of life. There is a nice balance to the scene that makes it feel complete. The extreme blackness of the clothing causes a curious appearance in the two women on the left with the two of them merging into a four footed person as their feet meet the street. These pilgrims do not look too happy to see you taking their photograph.

Beautiful capture, Pnina. The expressions and attitudes are unique. Excellent exposure and contrast. Good shot! Warm regards

Ruud,

Thanks for stopping by and commenting

Gord,

Thanks for both your comments. In this shot there was one of them that did not like it ( see his finger..;-)) but than all the group has approached me asking questions I told them what I do, showed them the photos in the camera screen, asked them question myself and they were glad and willing to talk with a local person like me ( telling me about their pilgrimage, where they came from etc), and it was very nice and friendly. I was not aware of the shoes on the floor....;-)) nice observation, four eyes are sometimes better than two ;-))

David,

Thanks again for your nice support.

Pnina;

Thanks for the added background information. They looked more concerned than angry in your photo. The man seems to be alerting the others to your presence rather than giving you the finger in the typical vulgar western way. The women in particular look suspicious as is understandable dealing with a stranger in a foreign land. Knowing you as I feel that I do, I am certain you put their fears to rest and made them feel comfortable and welcome.

I immediately felt tension in this and found that it added considerably to it as a documentary image. I'm glad you were able to communicate your harmless intentions to them. Good street shot.

I'm glad that this turned out to be a positive experience. I would have been very concerned with four of them looking straight back at me. The dark clothes truly make them stand out from the surroundings.

Great shot Pnina.........so many cultures converge on this place......amazing....a centre of controversy.always through 'history'.........you caught many different expressions on their faces...good timing!!

What amazes me is how these photos contrast so extensively from your dance photos. When dancing, your subjects are loose and free, expressing emotions and physicality. The photos of these various religious groups show the strictures of belief. Both are choreographed in their own way. Both have practiced steps. Both have meaning. But look at the stiffness in these people. I say this having been raised in a strict religious household. I know the fear of making a wrong step.

Gord, thanks for your follow up, yes, it became a very friendly and interesting human encounter and conversation ...;-))

David, thanks, the tension has dissolved quite fast,....

Adan, pilgrimage and religious praying institutes, of the monotheistic religions are very common in the city, you will see them every where

Mehmet, thanks for your stopping by and commenting

Gail, thanks, yes layers and also conflicts along the long history....

Jeff, what a good comparison, for me dance movement, music, is freedom, a way to be free, figuratively, in the way life are tying us to the ground. Religions on the other hand, keeps human bounds up to certain way of behavior and obedience to laws written thousandthof years ago....My general aim is to photo many corners of human life.

Alberto, thanks as well.

They look stark, alien even to these surroundings that accommodate such a diversity of people. They look bohemian, grim, sheltered in such an ancient, international city. I wonder if they look at Jerusalem through tunnel vision. Nobody smiles. Such a shame.

imho the only possible adjustement could be a light cropping on the right, just to balance the whole a bit more, thanks and compliments, Giuseppe

Interesting shot. Your B&W street pieces are woking quite well at setting tone and mood for the stories. They are an interesting group to look at. I can't tell if they were happy about you taking the shot, pretty sure they knew you were taking the shot. There seems to be a sense of distrust or displeasure that you were entering into their world. That does change the meaning of the shot as opposed to capturing a normal moment in their day. It is still a strong shot. Nice textures in the background as well. - Charles

Donna, this was the only photo I took of the group, they look as if unhappy .but as I wrote before( to Gordon) they have approached me, asked me questions, I showed them what I did , and asked them questions myself, we talked and the atmosphere was very pleasant...

Giuseppe, Thanks, I cropped already part on the R side, as there was an element that disturbed, but thanks for your offer and comment.

I find the steps on the R side a "telling", part of the story ;-))

Charles, thanks again for your observant comments, as I wrote to Donna, it became a very friendly conversation. I work hard to learn to convert color to B/W, so your comment about it is very important.
