Giangiorgio Crisponi 477 Posted April 16, 2019 Parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus) eating the flowers of the Juda tree. The name "Juda tree" (Cercis siliquastrum) instead refers to the region of Judea, in the Near East, from where it would originate, and from which it spread throughout the Mediterranean basin. Thanks also to its area of origin and the intense flowering approximately in time of Easter, ancient legends, tied to the first Christianity, were born to symbolically represent some vicissitudes of the last days of Jesus in the Gospels [1]. The sudden appearance of the flowers of an intense lilac-violet color on the bare bark, even before the leaves, would symbolically represent the time of the Passion of Jesus, as well as the color of the Christian liturgical vestments related to it, Nikon D500. Lens nikon 300mm, f/8, 1/800sec, ISO 100.The birds are free in nature. Thanks for your comments Link to comment
gregverena 342 Posted April 17, 2019 Giangiorgio- we were surprised to see this tree from Sardinia- we have one in our yard and they are native to the US. Apparently, Other similar species originate in other places of the world. This is interesting history. http://capitalnaturalist.blogspot.com/2014/04/the-judas-tree.html Link to comment
Giangiorgio Crisponi 477 Posted April 18, 2019 Gregory and Verena thank you for your nice comments and for your observations. These Judas trees have always adorned our avenues and our gardens and in this Easter period they are in full bloom. The flowers grow directly from the bark of the branches Link to comment
