there's even a broken post aiding the composition! a very well considered composition, Dave, giving us a panoramic view of the improvised homes of the impoverished homeless... the question, though ill phrased, is well asked...

David, These most recent three images are quite profound. I am guessing that you intentionally did not include any people in the images. There are plenty signs of life here though, especially the dog, which I assume is somebody's companion. I wish I could read the smaller signs.

I'm ashamed to admit this, but these were taken pretty much on the fly. The reason for this is primarily because I'm a coward. But my rationalization, is that I did not want to embarass anyone, nor make them feel that they were a spectacle. Additionally, I fear angering people and being mobbed by people who want a handout. I often do give money to people begging, but a crowd all seeking money encircling me alone would be kind of hard to handle.

You paid close attention and I'm impressed. There were several dogs here and they appeared to be in an enclosure. I've noticed that a lot of homeless have dogs. I think the reasons are pretty obvious. First, I think homeless people in general are more compassionate toward all life than most of us. I suppose it is their experience of being homeless that makes them more sympathetic. Also, no dog ever questioned the judgement of his master. They give unconditional love, and that is something these folks don't get much of.

I generally avoid taking pictures of homeless because I feel it is exploitative unless it is going to be used for some useful purpose to their benefit. I did these because the Fresno Art Museum is going to do a show on the homeless and I will submit one or two for the show. I'd like to take the entire town of Fresno (the wealthier ones anyway) down to these encampments. The size of them is shocking. They either don't see them, or pretend to not see them.

David, I understand your fears. I fight them myself. Sometimes i get the better of them, but more often I find myself shying away from talking to people. I don't know why I still do this, because when I do take the risk, it has almost always been worth it. That said, I think you are braver than you give yourself credit for. i would bet those wealthy people you mention avoid this area out of fear; fear of being accosted or robbed, and maybe, hopefully, fear of the guilt they might feel at seeing how poorly others live while they live in luxury.

David, a poignant and moving testimonial you presented here. In addition this being very well composed ( especially as you mentioned that you took this 'on the go'..), I am moved by the content, or lack thereof, in your photo. It appears that the people living here created a real community of sorts in spite of their destitute living conditions. I note the dog and the bike, and the sign, of course, which is a provocative centerpiece and makes for a very fitting title.

And WE are  bragging about  our  freedom and democracy?  Pathetic. Excellent work David. GOD  bless you. ( the real ONE).
