This is a technique called mantling used by raptors to protect their

dinner from being taken by other raptors and crows.

We have seen this behaviour from time to time done by the goshawks in our areas.

Very well captured !

I had two Red Tailed hawks growing up. This is an instinctive behavior to mantle their kill as shown above. When their in tall dry grass it also serves as camouflage, I've literally walked passed my bird when she was on the ground. Excellent shot!
