This is one of my first experiments with HDR, The Photograph is taken

in the Chapter Room at Valle Crucis Abbey a monastic building dating

back to 1201, any thoughts or comments would be appreciated.

Thank You.

Visually this is stunning......don't know how realistic it is, but I half expect to see Harry Potter flying through here. :-) The special effects you've used are great, and although I have yet to do my first HDR, I think you've managed that well also. Great job, and Happy New Year to you!

This is a fantastic HDR image! It feels real old and from another planet. I am a Star Treak fan and I love this image! My point and shot Chinese Lady was in one of the greatest Parks in San Francisco, with hundreds of tourist all around, we were all doing our own thing! And homeless everywhere. Warm regards.

Hello Alf, I have not (yet) done HDR images myself, but seeing your marvelous picture here above, makes me quite curious :-) I think that you've created a very nice atmosphere in your photo! I also very much like the composition with the view through the pillars, to the outside world.

With very best wishes, Marjolein

Hello Alf, the place is very well captured and the colours are quite from a fantasy movie. It brings a feel of the adventure movies we see.

Very well done! Cheers!

CHRISTAL

Thank you for your comments, particularly the Harry Potter one, that made me chuckle!

We went to the Abbey because it was heavy rain and it was one of the only places we could think of where we could get a few shots without our gear getting soaked, but I'm glad we did. As for realistic, well a HDR is like a kind off intense reality, thats about that best way I can describe it, but the variations and similarities to realism are infinate, but I believe this particular image is not too far removed from reality

I look forward to seeing your first HDR in the future Christal, I used "Photomatix" software, and it seems to work ok for me, though I'm still in the experimental stage.

Warm Regards

Alf

Thank you for looking in I really appreciate your comments "May The Force Be With You" : - )

MARJOLEIN

Thank you for your very kind comments, you should really give HDR a try, it is only a case of "Bracketing" 3 - 5 images and blending them with suitable software, the results can be interesting, you can then blend the HDR image with a normal Jpeg image as I have in another couple of recent postings, the permutations are infinate, but it's fun experimenting.

Kind Regards

Alf

Thank You for your very kind comments, I know exactly what you mean, it looks like something out of "Lord of The Rings", but it's great to get lost in a bit of fantasy.

for your first try....very nice job....I haven't even ventured in that direction.....but have read up on it.......your shot is dramatic and pleasing to the eye....I'd love to visit old places like this.....(I've always loved history-ruins etc.) You must have had a ball here....so much to see and photograph......congrats on a fine composition...sincerely, Gail.

The HDR has certainly created a haunting feel to the Abbey and is very effective in producing such an atmosphere. Excellent work.

You would love this place it is steeped in history. The Abbey is situated in a fairly remote place, even with modern roads, back in the thirteenth century it must have been totally isolated. There is a wealth of photographic opportunities here, however on the particular day we stopped by there, it was raining heavily so we couldn't take any outside shots, however it has been tagged for a definate return visit.

Thank you for your interest Gail Much appreciated!

Thank you for your comments, it is early days with my experimental HDR shots, but this one seems to have worked ok, there are so many variations of the HDR that it's difficult to know where to start, but I'm really grateful for the feedback from yourself and others who have commented, it is a good indication that I am on the right track.

Kind Regards

You are off to quite a start with HDR. Makes me want to learn more about this technique. It certain accentuates all the architectural details. GJ

You got the touch of a story-book illustration. Nice result, but except the fact that the lawn is visible in the background, the image builds (successfully) on the side effect of a bit exaggerated local tone mapping that we ended up to associate with HDR even if this is not quite what proper HDR is all about. Sorry for the technicalities.

Thank you for your encouraging comments, I still have a lot to learn about this process, but I like some of the effects so far also.

Thank you for looking in and for your observations, the surreal story book illustration is what i wanted to achieve here, but on the advice of a freind I have ordered a book that gives a full explanation and guide to HDR and hopefully I will be able to sharpen my skills using this method. Of course not all situations lend themselves to HDR but I think this one did.

JILL

I can't help but remember your stunning self portrait, whenever I read your name, thank you for your visit and your very kind comments the "fairytale" look was exactly what i wanted to achieve

Sincere Thanks for everyones imput and Kind Regards To All

Hi Alf, I think this would be a good photo HDR or not. Very interesting place. Does HDR alter the colors? For example the floor appears blue on my monitor, should it be like that?

Best Regards,

Holger

I missed this one when you first posted it. I'm glad I caught it. This is wonderful. I love it! It didn't strike me as HDR at first glance, it does seem like an illustration from a book of fairytales. The results are beautiful what ever you did. What sort of software did you use? I'm also curious about the colours? Maybe you could post the original for comparison?

Best wishes,

Linda

Thank you both so much for looking in.

Since you asked similar questions, please allow me to answer together.

The HDR process combines 3 or more "bracketed" images 2 stops apart, in this case one normal exposure, one underexposed, and one overexposed. The HDR process exaggerates and concentrates some colours to give that painted or illustrated look so the blue colour you can see is correct. The software I used is "Photomatix Pro 3" I only have a fundamental understanding of the process at this point, but I have ordered a book on the subject, and intend to learn more about it myself. I will endeavour to post a normal exposure within the next few days for comparison.

Thank you both for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate the feedback.

Warm Regards

Alf

I'm not wonder, . . you get so mach comments for this image. Dynamic colors, the almost symmetrical composition is working very well here, the HDR is used just in the border, it is a master pice of architecture image and an excellent post processing technic. Bravo Alf, bravo.

Cheers; Bela
