Mating Butterflies – Malachite butterfly - (Siproeta stelenes). Two weeks ago I photographed these mating butterflies in the “ Butterflies Garden – Hunawihr” in Alsace, with the only lens I had on the day, the 12-24mm at 24mm. with Nikon D500, f / 4, 1/640 sec, ISO 2000. Thanks for your comments.

Hi Giangiorgio,

this is a very well executed photo! I agree with Gary about the clarity and colors. The lens you had on your camera explains the rather spectacular DoF, the focal distance being only 36 mm (1,5 x 24 mm). Bravo! Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Giangiorgio, great shot! With that lens, you must have been right on top of them, surprising that they stayed still, but since it was a butterfly garden, they would be accustomed to being around people. I have a similar shot from a garden, but my lens was a 300mm with a MFD of 5 feet, very different. ciao, Bill

Thank you so much for Bill for your visit and the nice and much appreciated comment, I too was surprised by the confidence that these and other butterflies let themselves bring near so close , ciao Giangiorgio

An amazing capture Giangiorgio! The details and colors are superb, and it is such a unique pose on the underside of the leaf. They certainly weren't bothered by you taking their photograph. Warmest regards, Todd
