Wayne Sadler 616 Posted September 29, 2021 An usher at the church of San Giorgio Maggiore - Venice, Italy. In the Roman period, the wealthy Romans had porters or slaves whose duty it was to guard the entrance of a house. According to wikipedia in the Third Century the Catholic Church called an usher a porter whose role was to guard the church doors against disruptive intruders. Now they serve as welcomers and in various other capacities. With the current state of world affairs I wonder when they will be used again as guards. Link to comment
michaellinder 16,613 Posted September 29, 2021 Since I don't know the demographics of Catholic worshippers, I can't address your query. However, this image's elements are strong enough to deserve comment. First, the details and style of the architecture are worth more than a moment's glance. Next, the church's open door is obviously symbolic. Finally, without your narrative, I find the woman's location and stance as ambiguous, which - to me, is the strongest element. Since she's holding a cell phone, but not up to her ear, she could be texting or otherwise engaging in other features the phone offers. Possibly, she's about to enter the church to pray and to present offerings. Bravissimo, Wayne! - - My best always, michael Link to comment
Wayne Sadler 616 Posted September 30, 2021 Thanks, Michael. I like your interpretation too. The woman’s outfit sent me down the catholic usher rabbit hole. Link to comment
vincentoiseau 83 Posted October 1, 2021 Hi Wayne, a highly appealing painting, which combines classical and Roman catholic elements. The woman is standing outside of the church and it's up to the viewer to decide if she's coming or going, something I like about this image. Together with that bit of mystery, the soft light, pastel colors and pleasing architectural shapes make a great painting. Well done! Kind regards, Vincent Link to comment

Todd Kraenzel 1 Posted October 3, 2021 Wayne, this is definitely one of my favorites of your images. I really like the crop and the way the light is cast onto the entry. As Vincent said, the woman creates a mystery that allows my imagination to create all kinds of possible story lines. Well done! Todd Link to comment
