On a very bright summer day in Digne-les-Bains, southern France, we visited the 'jardin des papillons' (the butterfly garden), which is a spectacular place for butterfly enthusiasts. It's an open-air garden/park where the vegetation attracts all kinds of insects, but mainly butterflies. You'll easily see 40 to 50 different species there and they're relatively easy to photograph in the bright summer light. The cabbage white is not a rare species, but I liked this angle. Your comments are very welcome.

Hi Gary,

thank you for your very friendly comments and for favoriting this photo! Of course I had many misses that day , but there always was a new chance presenting itself, sometimes when you weren't even done making a photo, a new butterfly landed. Kind regards, Vincent

Bravo Vincent, you managed to photograph this common cabbage while with the spirotromba sucks the nectar of the flower, the butterfly stands out clearly from the blurred background , ciao Giangiorgio

Thanks as usual, Vincent for the narrative. I've never encountered this species of butterfly, resulting in being entirely engaged in this image. (Thanks to Giangiorgio, I know now what function spirotromba play. Initially, I thought they were antennae!) In any case, the summer light you mentioned resulted in the wings being on the darker side of translucence, which I found quite enchanting. Moreover, the sharp detail of the insect, especially the spirotromba, is very strong. This raised a question. What lens did you use? Finally, the flowers' colors are quite alluring. - - My best always, michael

Hi Michael,

firstly, thank you for your interesting, relevant comments and for favoriting this photo! The strong summer light gave me the freedom to use a lens that needs a lot of light to be used manually, in this case, an Olympus Zuiko 70-300 mm 4.0-5.6 zoom. The purple lavender flowers are a favorite among butterflies. Kind regards, Vincent
