vincentoiseau 83 Posted August 6, 2021 I was happy to have brought my tele-zoom on my walk; I wouldn't have this photo if I didn't. The early evening summer light hit this weathered treetrunk and brought out all the character and beauty. I like the shallow DoF of a long lens in a situation like this. With a shorter focal length, I couldn't have got this shot. I intentionally chose this centered composition. Your comments are very welcome. Link to comment
vincentoiseau 83 Posted August 7, 2021 Hi Wayne, thank you for your appreciative comment! I shot this photo on a monopod, with a shutter speed of 1/640, which was enough to get this result. Kind regards, Vincent Link to comment
Todd Kraenzel 1 Posted August 8, 2021 A well spotted and executed image of one of my favorite subjects Vincent! I totally agree that the telephoto makes this shot possible. I like the centering of the tree trunk between both foreground and background foliage bracketing it. Warmest regards, Todd Link to comment

Giangiorgio Crisponi 509 Posted August 9, 2021 Bravo Vincent, this beautiful image taken with a telephoto lens clearly shows all its structure, the hundreds of holes caused by insects are perfectly visible, the grazing light creates a three-dimensional effect. Also I am using , with satisfaction, this much more manageable lens than the old Sigma 300-800 , ciao Giangiorgio Link to comment

michaellinder 16,613 Posted August 11, 2021 Superb detail, lighting, and colors certainly make this image pop. Vincent, your creative use of centered composition is spot on. But, what I like the most is the bit of mystery created by what must have resulted from the loss of a large limb; I suspect that its interior serves as home for forest animals. - - My best always, michael Link to comment
vincentoiseau 83 Posted August 11, 2021 Hi Franz, thank you for coming back to this photo and favoriting it! I'm glad you like the summer-lit structure of the tree; that's what made me take the photo. Kind regards, Vincent Link to comment
vincentoiseau 83 Posted August 11, 2021 Hi Michael, thank you so much for your beautiful comments and for favoriting this photo! You're the first to bring up what looks like a missing branch, which could very well be the entrance to a nest in the treetrunk (the hole in it reinforces thatimpression). ccabaniss 9 Posted August 13, 2021 Hi Vincent: It seems like I've been drawn to this type of subject many times from my beginnings in photography, probably for the same reasons that prompted you to capture this image...the low-angle light highlighting the intriguing texture of this weathered old tree trunk, ravaged by insects, still serving a purpose - likely providing shelter to birds and/or other animals. I may upload a series of such images of my own, the latest of which were taken with the same fine lens. Best regards, Charles. Link to comment
