This is the most common bumblebee, the large earth bumblebee or bombus terrestris. The species forages on nectar and pollen and is often used as a pollinator in greenhouses. It has its nest (mostly) underground. It is considered by some to be threatened as a species, by others as a menace to local bumblebee populations. Your comments are very welcome.

Vincent, my temporary home away from home braces me with a plethora of bumblebees. On a few occasions, several of them were hovering in close proximity to my face, perhaps to check me out. This image captures both this one's colors and detail, especially its cilia in an intriguing way, which kept my attention for quite a while. Fine macro work! BTW, what lens did you use? - - My best always, michael

Hi Michael,

thank you for your very friendly and relevant comments! These insects are wonderful to watch and they are not aggressive, like some wasp species. I used a very simple zoom lens on a tripod, an Olympus Zuiko 70-300 mm f 4.0-5.6 at f 8.0, but could have easily gone to f 11.0, which would have given me greater depth of field, but potentially more motion blur as well, which this image already has in some parts. Kind regards, Vincent
