In 1984 I bought a Lomo Lubitel 2, a Russian 6x6 camera, on a collectors market for next to nothing. It felt like a gimmick, made of bakelite with some metal parts, like the parts of the lids of the top viewfinder. This camera was made from 1955 to 1977 as a cheap beginner camera. I liked the no-electronics simplicity of the camera and although I bought it as a 'collection piece', I couldn't resist trying it out and put several rolls of 120 films in it. This is a photo I made on a deserted Scheveningen beach in 1985, probably on an autumn day. The day I scanned this negative, I saw this photo for the first time, which was a joy, regardless of the mediocre technical quality of the image. Your comments are very welcome.

Interesting retro photo and story, Vincent! An original composition and frame, filled with different rhythms created by the elements of the fence, reflections, waves, sounds ... Good in monochrome. Bravo! Sincerely, Tatiana

Dear Vincent, compared to today's young people who only know digital, we old photographers have an archive of negatives and slides that every time we look at them, awaken the memories of the moment of the shot. I just hope our children and grandchildren take care of our archives. Continue to propose us your interesting old images, ciao Giangiorgio

Hi Tatiana,

thanks for your amiable comments! It was exactly what you say: the combination of rhythms and the way they came together made me take the photo. At the time I rarely shot color negatives. Kind regards, Vincent

Vincent, although I've been doing digital photography for a while now, I still remember my film cameras, especially the Canon AE1. My point is that I shot a photo quite like this one in Montauk, New York. You've presented not only a relatively simple scene, but also a set of memories of times that were much simpler. It pays tribute to those times with a representation of the sort of peace we all seek. - - My best always, michael

Hi Michael,

thank you for your friendly and relevant comments! I never owned an AE-1, but remember drooling over a brochure that featured it. I'd like to see that photo you made in Montauk. You are so right about life being simpler 35 years ago. This scene was very quiet, with the waves and the distant shrieks of gulls as the only sounds. Kind regards, Vincent

Hallo Franz,

(Hi Franz, thanks for your comment! I am pleased that you call the photo soothing. I think that this, in addition to the simplicity of the composition, also has to do with the amount of space in the image. Kind regards, Vincent)
