Great egret at sunset

vincentoiseau

On a sunny november afternoon, this great egret was flying over an almost motionless water surface at sunset, creating a beautiful reflection. Shot handheld with a Canon EF 400 mm 5.6 L lens.

This egret was clearly preparing to fly when I first saw it and luckily I was in time to capture it in flight, in the last sunlight of the day. The screech of the bird added an eerie quality to the moment, but alas sounds can not be photographed. I like the dark reflections of the trees in the water and the quietness of the scene. As always, your comments are very welcome.

"...the quietness of the scene." Yes, that's what struck me about this image. I think this photo captures some of the elements that so obviously impressed you. Your description of the screech of the bird breaking the silence caught my interest. Viewing this picture, I can almost hear it myself.

Hi Jack,

I like it to read that you can almost hear the screech of this heron looking at this picture. It was a strange experience to have that silence broken, even for someone who is a regular birdwatcher like me. Thank you for your very nice comments! Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Philip,

thank you for your appreciation of this photo. It was a special moment and everything seemed to come together. I would have liked a higher image quality though, but I can't complain having captured this moment. Kind regards, Vincent

Aside from its technical merits, this image is all about the sort of solitude and serenity in which a photographer can find a magnificent winged creature like this egret flying gently to its next roost. Vincent, you are privileged to have visited this spot with all its beauty and to have shot this photograph. The lighting is nothing short of magical. - - michael

I like the setback of the egret because it helps to envision the forward motion. The colors are wonderful and the exposure perfect so the feathers are not burned out. Wonderful reflections in the water that enhance the beauty of the image. Have a great day, Paul.

Hi Vincent, this image is very wonderful. The colors of the water contrast beautifully with the whiteness of the heron. Lighting is the best here and gives transparency to the wings, the reflection ... is the cherry on the cake! Kind Regards, Rosario.

I love laconic images. That one is a good example. Nothing drags your attention from the object. Great work!
