Ephemeral beauty

vincentoiseau

A mayfly lives for a few days at the most in its imago stage. The insect sat on a tent window, casting a shadow that it would barely outlive. Shot handheld with a Super Macro Takumar 50 mm 4.0 lens.

Beautiful detail,....the full view is amazing, I think they are called 'Canadian Soldiers' ( not sure where that came from )

Hi Tatiana,

thanks for your amicable comment. This creature is so short-lived that butterflies would pity it. Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Foureyes,

I tried to look it up and didn't find it, but the name seems to be based on some joke. Thanks very much for your comments and support. Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Kristian,

thanks for your friendly comment. I had to capture the insect and its shadow in one photo and failed several times, until I made this picture. You have to have some patience, even with mayflies :) Kind regards, Vincent

Hi Giuseppe,

thanks for stopping by and commenting on this photo and its caption; the life of a mayfly is rather short, certainly from a human perspective. Kind regards, Vincent

It looks like it's floating on air, Vincent. Excellent colors, light and details. You've captured all the features of the body and wings. The light is perfect and the composition presents the insect very well. Best regards, Paul.

Hi Paul,

thank you for taking the time to comment on this photo. This mayfly was sitting on the plastic window of our tent so motionless that it wasn't hard to approach it. It could have been the insect's last hour, but I'm not an entomologist, so I didn't know, but I always feel sorry for the life span of these creatures compared to ours. Kind regards, Vincent
