Blue tit

When you stand still long enough, sometimes birds come to check you out. Shot on a monopod with a Canon EF 400mm/5.6 L lens. Lepelaarplassen, Almere, Netherlands

Very good! It's sharp; you can almost count every small feather, the eye is sharp, the worm is a nice bonus. If this was mine, I would try to crop it from the right side to see if it would make the composition better. These birds are quite hard to photograph, they move so quickly and are also so small, that you need some kind of telephoto lens. I have tried to photograph these little birds with manual focus gear and it's not an easy task, I guess autofocus lenses would help much with these small birds.

Good approach and texture of image. Nice and opportune detail. It would win a bit, I believe, if the little bird was in the right third of the photo. Regards.

Hi Efren, thanks a lot for your nice comment. I understand your suggestion of a different crop. Normally I tend to place a bird more to the right or left of a picture (as you can see in my kingfisher shot), but the twigs that the bird is perched on form a V-like shape that is directed at the top right corner, while the bird is leaning in the opposite direction. I liked that a lot and it made me choose this composition. Thanks again. Regards, Vincent

Hi Giangiorgio,

thank you for your comment on this image. I am glad I captured this; it was a matter of patience. My lack of movement made the bird curious and it came towards me after a few minutes. In a woody environment you need to have the bird sit on a well-lit spot. Kind regards, Vincent

What a beautiful and elegant looking bird, Vincent. Excellent focus on the eye, beak and snack. Gorgeous colors, light and background. The composition highlights the main attraction with aplomb. The birds pose is pure charm. Your skills and patience have created a striking image. Best regards, Paul.

Hi Paul,

thanks for your very friendly comments! This image required some editing before I could publish it, but it was worth the while. I'm happy with the result myself too; the blue tit is one of my favorite birds, but hard to photograph. Kind regards, Vincent
