At leas in my opinion contrast is the key to this picture. Just visible guitar is also a plus. I like it a lot. Strong composition as well.

But I think the positioning could be more to the right and to the bottom! I mean the man is turned to the left, therefore the more empty space should be on that side and more of the guitar should be shown!

Weariness and struggle, imprinted in a face.  Maybe the contrast could be eased a little but it's still a great image.  Thanks also for the background story.  

Expressive portrait!

Very powerful. My vote is keep the contrast for such a strong subject. Also I like the composition - nice diagonal slope from top left to bottom right - I wouldn't change a thing.
