Wayne Sadler 584 Posted September 29, 2013 I could hardly believe my good fortune to be on the Grand Canal inVenice nearing sunset. I knew my skills as a photographer had notevolved to the point of deserving such an opportunity, but I hadconfidence that editing software could salvage all except the gravestof mistakes. I was in such awe of the scenery I could not thinkstraight. As the lighting changed I didn’t think to adjust ISOsettings to continue to allow for shutter speeds that I could continueto handhold. I found myself at times holding my breath trying not toadd movement to the camera. Being excited and holding your breath isnot a good thing. Comments and critique welcome. Link to comment
mike_palermiti 3 Posted September 29, 2013 Hi Wayne,A pleasant view. Like a postcard !Try exhaling prior to pushing the shutter release .Another techniques is to NOT look at the scene though the viewfinder while pressing the release. These techniques and others have allowed me to hand hold 500 mm lens at 1/30 second, free standing.Best Regards my friend, Mike Link to comment
Wayne Sadler 584 Posted September 29, 2013 Thanks, Mike. Never tried those techniques before. Link to comment

Wayne Sadler 584 Posted September 30, 2013 Thanks, John and Laurent. I think the gondolier admonished me a couple of times leans too far over the side of the gondola going for angles even closer to the water. Link to comment
GailAnthonyHarmer 6 Posted September 30, 2013 Good advice from Mike. I was holding my breath so much and found that I was tensing up too much. I found that upon 'exhale' it was a whole new experience. (I hold my breath in the Dentist's chair as well! ;-) a very good capture with excellent compositional elements within. (BTW, I haven't got a 500mm, but with what I do have, I really haven't perfected 1/25th of a second handheld, but still practicing!!) Link to comment
