Hi Alf,

It's really worth beeing viewed large. The detail is very rich. Well done !

I can see everything is ok with the D800...  :-) I like all the photos you did with your new friend.

Best regards

A bit difficult to measure the optical performance in such foggy conditions, but at F5.6 the lens appeared to perform well.

But Its very gratifying to read that the aesthetics appealed to you.

Sincere Thanks my friend!

Many Thanks for your thoughts and observations.

You keep coming up with great alternative titles "out of the blue"

I might have to consult you before I post them in future : - )

I guess this is where compression works in the photographers favour.  I was standing quite a distance away from the tiny island and focused on it at with an aperture of F5.6 at a focal length of 185 mm to give the desired effect of the mountains appearing closer than they actually were.

Sincere Thanks for your thoughts and observations, I'm really pleased you liked this one.

Sincere Thanks your interest and invaluable feedback!

As you may be able to percieve from some of the early work I posted on PN, I went through phases of applying saturation to a degree where images looked surreal, sometimes over sharpened and other times where tints and shades where far from the actual scene I had witnessed.

In fact it could be said that my iniital work  "The temptation to endlessly tweak" was not restrained at all

(I leave my old work on the PN portfolio as a record and reminder as well as an indicator of progress, or not as the case may be)

But as time went on, retaining the subtleties of a photograph became more important than the drama and colour of a bolder image, and the means to achieve this goal by doing less PP or making tiny changes is an ongoing learning curve.

Successful photography is often guaged by the image having the aesthetics or visual power to inspire the viewer to "feel"  some form of emotion, and it is therefore most gratifying to read that this was the case when you studied this one.

Many Thanks for your thoughts and positive feedback.

The photo's I post are invariably optimised for the larger size.

But I sometimes wonder if I should post smaller images and optimise at the smaller size, in order to avoid initial blurry impressions.

I have recently taken some hand held shots with the D800 (although this wasn't one of them)  and despite reading that there could be difficulties in achieving sharpness etc, my findings so far have all been positive.

I will post one of them soon.

Best Regards

I seem a bit late to the party again.  This truly is an image conveying a sense of feeling.  But, I do not feel so much "Lost" as I do "Alone" or "Left Behind".   Quite a dramatic image in its emotional evocation.   Cheers to you, great work.  With best regards...

Oh my... You seem to be on a roll nowadays, Alf... I very much like your latest 3 works...Their clean feel & subtle scenery portrayed are all lovely... The above may be my favorite for its exquisite -- deceptively simple -- blueish overall setting.

I guess it needs to be seen large to fully appreciate it. A very pleasing and soothing image, Alf -- it should look great, as an (enlarged) print in a bedroom e.g. :-)  Gr, M

I take it as good sign that you place your own anaolgy on the scene, it tells me that your perception differs from mine, but the important thing is that it communicates and stirs some kind of emotion, and that is what I aim to do.

Sincere Thanks for your thoughts and kind words Dave, much appreciated!

Seems that Photography is like that, up there with the best one minute and errm well desperately seeking inspiration the next, but a wonderful adventure nonetheless, this elusive road to perfection.

Subtlety is something I'm coming to appreciate more, maybe that blue colour and damp atmosphere might look more at home in the bathroom : - )

Sincere Thansk for your thoughts and most encouraging feedback!

Such was the thickness of the fog, the little island was just about the only thing to focus on.  But it seemed to work.

Sincere Thanks & Best Regards

nice artistic piece, Alf; the horizon poeticizes for me that the mountains and sky are as much apart of this 'lost at sea' image as the sea itself... the little island engulfed by the overwhelming largeness of places on the earth that are this remote. and i think my first connection with the piece, Alf, is that it is existentially how i feel most of time, lol. thx for the connection, my friend. ;-} dp

DONNA

Your comments are most generous but also interesting.

The absence of anything scaleable, I think adds much to the impressions of this image, and the sense of remoteness is heightened by the fog, which serves to mask all signs of mankind.

I love your analogy of this one Donna : - )  we are but dust travelling through infinity.

Sincere Thanks & Best Regards

Wow, talking about being late to a party!  A long list of interesting and valid comments.  For me this is mystical and I expect to see a longboat full of Vikings appear around the island.  It certainly sparks the imagination. Well done...  Mike

It is what it is. I might make sharp things sharper, but this was as hazy as it got and adding extra haze PP wouldn't have seemed right at all. The distant haze is a result of compression and the foggy conditions, also as a result the small island appears much closer to the background. At the distances involved it is doubtful that even shooting at f2.8 would have made the background any more hazy than it was.

Many Thanks for your thoughts and positive feedback. I quite like that Viking analogy ...... there was a small kayak that appeared out of the fog..............but I'm sure his helmet didn't have any horns attached, : - )

brighter then. i think i want it brighter. it just doesn't look like the world i live in. even the lake district in winter. brighter. j

At 6.30 am it just isn't "brighter"  : - ) I didn't use exposure compensation and I didn't adjust levels. It was supposed to convey what it is, 6.30 am on Derwent Water. I believe that it does, I should know I was there.

Hi Alf

As a rule I do not generally read the critiques before posting my own, however, on this occasion I did..... When viewed large this image is a vision to behold and the title "Lost" is befitting, as I got totally lost in this visually stunning image......and the answer to your question....."Is there enough detail to hold your attention"?....is a very definitive YES!...... the expression "less is more" springs to mind....  I have to disagree with Jamie, it neither needs to be hazier or brighter, for me and 99.9% of the other critiques the image is simply paradisaical!!.... Maybe Jamie is seeing something the rest of us aren't?... Or maybe he is an Alien and doesn't live in our world :) ..... Admirable and incomparable work Alf!!

warmest regards

Jacqueline

Many Thanks for your interest and thoughtful feedback.

I totally agree with the "more is less" analogy of this scene, the minimilistic aspect is one that I wanted to convey and its most gratifying to read that this has been communicated to you.

As for the brighter or hazier former suggestions, the scene above is as close to what I witnessed as I could possibly reproduce with a camera, and I purposely kept editing to a bare minimum. Changing the brightness or artificially changing the density of the fog, would not be a true representation of the scene at the time, and I suspect the results would lack the early morning atmosphere that is predominant in the existing image.

Warm Regards

Oooooh yes, just soooooo tranquil, idyllic, peaceful, restful, lovely and I'm sure bl**dy cold!

The island sneaking in on the left really makes the image. Definiely one for the wall.

It was a bit cool : - )  but the fact that there was no wind at all helped a lot.

This was another taken in The Lake District region of Cumbria, this time the lake was "Derwent Water"

Sincere Thanks for your interest and positive feedback.

Alf, it is a wonderful photo due to fog effect and sharp island. Rare to get both at the same time, mostly everything becomes foggy. Only one thing I can suggest is may be clone out the left passage that leads to the island. You will be left with a sharp island and beautiful silhouette. Even as it is, this is great shot.

Best wishes... Sandeep

Sincere Thanks for your positive feedback and thoughtful suggestions, very much appreciated!

I did take a similar photograph a couple of years ago, and did exactly as you suggested, leaving the island seperated, and it did look quite effective. These days I tend to try and leave everything as shot.

Best Regards
