A delightful candid of this little girl (& her pal Dino)  which resonates with me for two reasons: I love the B&W medium for people photos and she's about the same age as my only granddaughter.  B&W simplifies this one by presenting only the important shapes, tones, and textures.  The soft lighting of the shaded area is ideal for smooth young skin tones.  The catch lights in both eyes is more icing on the cake as is the relatively shallow DOF which separates your subject from and softens the background and makes it less distracting.  Go to the head of the class with this one Donna.  Best, LM.

Hi Donna, I totally agree with Len, an outstanding image. The composition is perfect as she and dino look out together, coincidence maybe but it works. This is special and goes into my favorites. Take care.

Best Always,

Holger

thank you all, admired gentlemen... Len, you point out everything that  were the important conditions in this scene; i'm so grateful i saw it; i'm begining to truly luv pictures of children; they're such natural works of art ;-} ... Holger, in your faves collection! wow! thanks for pointing out that she and Dino were looking together, lol... dear Matthijs, Marjolein is most magnificent, and no doubt whatsoever that her tutelage is in this piece... Ruud, glad you like! ;-} dp

Very sweet and natural.  I like how her gaze is pulled away, which adds to the spontaneity.  The little dragon chair behind her adds another sense of a "found" gem, not obsessively composed but genuine.

Gunnar, you thrill me... you understand this picture so well; Jeff, no fancy composition at all; you're right; i laid down in the grass squirming like snake for the light and angle that would portray her as she is... a most beautiful child at a folk music festival ;-} dp

As you already pointed out that children are natural works of art! I agree with that. I photographed my nephew and you can find him in my folder 'Glimpses'.

Emotionally, it was a novel experience for me at the time.

Some photographs make me smile, and this is one of them.  It's the expression and the warmth and its got that "Awwww" factor that I normally reserve for puppies and small animals ( hope that doesn't sound insulting in any way, it isn't mean't to)  You have got all the technical bits spot on too, dof and sharpness and superb B & W's

Beautuifully done!

Best Regards

Alf

Ilkka! hello my friend... i have always said of your comments on my pictures that if it excites Ilkka, i know i have captured something very beautiful...

Katerina,,, thank you for sharing the very intimate and charming images of your beautiful nephew.. i luv the vertical composition, and the way you've made such a gorgeous compositional focus on his extraordinary smile!

Alf... this child tugged on my heart strings... it's not possible, and should never be tried, to compose this darling in any way except awww!  ;-}dp

El... you gave me the phrase "lens work" to describe for myself what it is that i mostly do in my pictures. i am forever grateful for hearing the resonance of your phrase before i hit the shutter... you gave my style a name! regards, dp.

What a great photo. Mainly for her expression, but also for being right on with the sharpness, tones, crop and DOV. Good one.

Lovely. I can only echo what others already wrote.

And I love the title too. I know one could argue about the importance of titles, but a good one helps to set a "mind set" - which this one did for me. It helps seeing it beyond the (logical!) reaction of "ah cute kid" but instead dive into the dreaminess of her gaze and the overal dreamlike atmosphere.

Lovely photo. In all ways.

photography has the power to reveal the poetry, the music, the deeper emotional meaning of a scene, Wouter, so yes i completely agree with you, photographer transforms us to a deeper place. thank you for liking the way this little girl portrayed herself to me ;-} dp
