Superb detail and natural colour! I also like the opposing upbeat and downbeat wing orientation of the birds and the balance and proportions of the birds within the frame.  I wonder if it was possible to capture their entire reflections also? I ask this because I think the slightly wind rippled water would have added another element to the image, but It's always very difficult to judge just as a viewer of the photograph.

Sincere Compliments

Alf,

Thanks so much for your detailed comment.  I understand what you are saying about the shadows of the birds.  Unfortunately, with birds in flight, the "moment" comes and goes in a split second.  I was trying to capture the two birds in the scene at the time, and later on finalizing the photo, saw the shadows and endeavored to include as much of them as I had captured in the final image, knowing they added to what I wanted to portray in the image.  So I cropped a little off the top and included as much of the shadows as I had at the bottom.  Thanks again for your thoughtful advice.

Hi Phil,

Beautiful capture. The geese are tack sharp against a somewhat blurred and neutral background. Reflections in the water add to the quality. A pleasure to watch. Your combination of camera and lens is a good choice. As you know I have the same set, and this combo works great for birds in flight.

Best regards Per.

Per,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts.  It means a lot to me to get your perspective.  Yes, I truly enjoy the camera/lens combination for birds in flight.

Both Alf and Per have covered this image admirably, leaving me very little else to say (for once-smiles).

It is tack clear (Per) and possibly the total reflections (Alf) could have added some more dynamics........ but it is still a great capture nevertheless.

A good one... all round.

Well done

Best regards

Very good composition: one's wings are down and the other's up.  Sharp and clean.  Best Regards,

I am totally in alignment with Alf`s comment. Great job.  I am thinking you had a shutter speed at least 1/1250s but I am going to check.

Tony,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your thoughts.  Yes, my shutter speed was exactly 1/1250.  I find that usually is fast enough to stop action, for the larger birds especially.  I sometimes struggle to get enough light though, especially in the early mornings, and may try to use even lower speeds if necessary.  Again, really appreciate you stopping by.

Hi Phil,

A wonderful scene from Nature well shot.

The Canon 400mm F/5.6 L series lens does offer it s best performance level at F/5.6, as you employed it.

Not only are the optical characteristic optimized, but this aperture allows for better shutter speeds and ISO ranges, too.

Best Regards  Mike

Phil,

Thanks for taking interest in my Bald Eagle shots and Eagle chasing adventures!

Now if I could just get some shots of them as fine as this one is of these Geese!

Very nice distinct details and I really enjoy that natural slightly blurred background. Certainly one of the best Canadian Geese shots I've seen in awhile!

Regards always,

Jim j.
