Ross - your reaction is very gratifying. I was quite excited by what i was looking at and fearful that I might not capture the scene well. This is a park I visit very regularly and most times I come home empty-handed.  I am thinking of submitting this for critique and for rating and the result is much like Forest Gump's box of chocolates - you never quite know what you are going to get. It is past my bedtime but i will stop by your recent images probably much later today. Hope you have fully recovered.

Tony,

You should definitely submit this for critique and rating, it is a very dramatic image that truly captures this in-between season.

Now I truly understand what Jim Morrison meant when he screamed, "Try to set the night on fire!"  Simply amazing work . . .

Ruud - it is why i stick close to home for most of my photography. I was away and on the road for about 8 hours, had sunshine, rain, overcast conditions, snow squalls, partially climbed a mountain and have very little to show for my efforts especially compared to this one just a few minutes away from where I live.

Jim;  good to hear from you - I will submit this one  much later or tomorrow and see what the choclate box has when I open it. I was really looking for fog today but there was not even a hint of it.

Michel L: thanks and I will remember the morrison reference.

This is a stunner of that there is no doubt, and I love the shape and dynamics of the clouds that are repeated to some extent by the convening elements of the wall, strip of grass and water. This might sound a bit negative, but the sky colours look a bit surreal, now of course they may have been that intense, but I'd be inclined to tone them down a smidgin before putting it up for rating. After that I'dd rate it 7.

Best Regards

Alf

PS: -  My monitor is due for calibration also so that may be a factor.

Nice image Tony. The previous version of this image was bit dark but I thought you wanted dark atmosphere. This is more appealing.

Tony...  I'll second Ross' Wow!  There's an intensity in the sky that belies the static leaves and calm water but makes for a very dramatic scene.  As always, excellent work... Mike

Alf, Sandeep and Michael: thank you very much for the very strong endorsement of this image. Based on lots of recommendations, I have taken the step of putting it up for ratings and see how it does but nothing surprise me.

Alf - thanks. I am not quite sure how to tone down the sky - I could run a blur filter on it or selectively de-saturate the color - all of which, based on memory, starts giving me a sense of not what I saw.  At this location, during the hour I was there, the conditions changed radically. here is one that i took about 30 minutes earlier. This one, while pretty, has no "WOW" factor.

I was actually hoping that this cloud pattern would hang around and produce some dazzling colors but i got something quite different.

And 30 minutes later at the same location - I got this.

PS The red stars are a remote control error where I had to power off the camera before it could do Noise reduction stage and was pleasantly surprised to get this effect.  will try and see if that is repeatable.

Thanks for the suggestion.  i am caught between a rock and a hard place.  It is Autumn and the leaves were an important element to me.  And yet the sky is a major attraction.  If i want to conform more to the rule of thirds re composition, I could cut the sky a bit.   If you have the time, please do the crop so that i can see what you had in mind. I really don't mind different versions put forward by PN members. I don't have to agree to all of the suggestions. When it comes to aesthetics, some have mastered this but i still struggle in trying to find the combined elements in an image that the majority of people find pleasing. It is an intangible quality people recognize it but it is hard to define.

No offense Tony - but the main photo looks ... quite horrible to me !!

All I can say is that you've gone a step too far playing with saturation sliders and basically "butchered" quite a nice scene.

It certainly has a "WOW" factor, but ... it's that kind of a wow you ... don't really need.

Composition-wise I think there is too much emphasis on the grass foreground. I would personally prefer a bit more water with that gorgeous reflections on it.

Just a thought really !

Cheers

Piotr

Stunning shot with the beautiful foreground.  Well balanced.  Nice color contract.  Love it.  Best regards,

Sorry I had not commented on this one earlier. This is awesome. And the one 30 minutes later is REALLY something special. Great job.
