I spent an hour or so watching the clouds form and then dissipate as they

moved from right to left -- a nice way to spend a morning. These rocks

"watched" along with me and allowed me to take their photo. Comments

and suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Simple, minimalistic shots are always so appealing and this shot is very well done in that regard.  However, my first impression was "Nude on a Rock"... sorry, but that's the truth... Mike

Michael, no apology necessary!  My second caption was going to be "A plumber and his helper under a cloud."  I went back and forth between "landscape" and "humor."  In the end (so to speak), minimalism won out.

Steve, this is a definite wow shot for me. It's so simple yet beautiful, delicately balanced and very appealing.

Thanks, Jeff.  I spent over an hour at this site, just waiting for clouds to drift by.  It was perfect for the square format.

Simple, texture, shadows, single cloud, composition - all elements of an outstanding photograph. Congratulations, Stephen - Lester

A buddy of mine was just there 3 weeks ago and was greeted by high winds and dust storms. I'm glad to see that you had better luck. Your composition, as always, is stellar and the cloud is the icing on the cake. Well seen, Stephen.

Thanks for the comments!  I enjoyed these rocks so much that I went back twice, each time with a different camera system, just to be "sure" that I didn't miss the image.  The cloud really made this particular image for me, and I found the square format to be perfect.

Leo, I stayed for a week here in Joshua Tree, and one day we had exceptionally strong winds.  I found myself standing on the edge of a 20-foot cliff, knees bent to be better able to react to the strong gusts, always gripping my tripod lest it be blown over, wanting to "get the shot" without being blown over the edge -- it (or I) was insane.

When Chris, Ray and I were there, we had one of our tents fiberglass support rods snapped and had to drive to the near town for repair items. It can be a very windy place.

Elegant shot. I love the shadows and detail in the rock. The cloud formation is placed beautifully. I like how both outer edges of the two main rocks have a v-shaped cut of blue in them which balances things out. Overall just a really cool composition!

Bela, Katie, and Jim, thanks for visiting and for the comments.  Jim, clouds were slowly drifting by, but often dissipating before they reached this spot.  I really liked the composition, so I just leaned against a rock wall and waited, watching the clouds drifting by.  A few finally made it.  It's a great way to spend an hour in the morning.
