This Adelie penguin was an extremely accommodating subject due to the molting process, which kept it in one spot for several days. Every so often it let out a lonely bark - all I had to do was compose, and wait.

Shot in the days of yore on Ektachrome film and digitized several years later via

drum scanner. All commentary and advice is welcome!

The coldness is almost tangible with the cool tones and crystallized ice featuring strongly.

The composition is spot on with the penguin pointing into the image and the diagonal lines of the waterway leading the viewers to discover the distant mountains.

Very well done!

Best Regards

Hi Patrick,

Very good photo, I like composition and color. I also miss the ol´ektachrome. I hated the digitalizing process though. Never drum scanned due to its expensiveness.

I would like to go again to Antarctica, when I was there I was using an old nikon A1 with the light meter damaged and had very little experience in photography.

Cheers,

Jorge

To Jorge: I am lucky to live in Washington, DC and had a friend who worked at National Geographic's print studio. He gave me a break on the cost of drum scanning, or it never would have happened! Thanks for the comments.

Another unique shot of an animal that I doubted that I ever will have a chance to encounter in the wild. Very good presentation of a unique animal and I think the title name is very .. appropriate. Sort of remind me of the movie Madagascar that my kid watch, LOL! TFS!

Ha! Thanks TM. I think if you went to shoot penguins in the wild, you'd find them boring. Your specialty is capturing bird activity at the peak moment, and honestly the above is pretty much peak activity for a penguin. You'd have to go underwater to get the kind of penguin action shots that you prefer! Thank you for the feedback.

With CNN playing "March of the Penguins" tonight I found myself drawn to this image. With its mouth open, it seems as though this penguin is crying out for her/his spouse who may have gone fishing facing many hazards in the water.

IMHO the penguin is perfectly placed and the rest of the image conveys the beautiful environment. I find the image very appealing and consider it very good.

I like the blue you have here but I am also looking at the long shadow behind the penguin which I associate with warmer light. I am thinking that I might have adjusted the color balance with a plus 7 yellow. Sometimes when I have done that with my own image, I often undo the change I made and stay with the original image.

Normally I might add equal amounts of yellow and red  to create the warmer image  but I detected a slight mauve in some blue areas which means that red already exists and that is why I considered just increasing the yellow.

In any event I have rated this a 6.
