Is the new toy your referring to the lens or the camera?. The detail on this is quite remarkable, I've never done any astro-photography as such, but this is really encouraging. Is your lens full frame? It looks pretty sharp. I'm considering buying a Nikkor AF- S 70 - 200 f2.8 VR 11, but they are really expensive, so I'm  looking at for a suitable alternative. Any idea's you have would be welcome.

Very impressive shot Tibi!

Best Regards

Intriging. I did not guess that a 300mm enlarges enough for this detail. Or was there more to it than that?  Alf, expensive also very large and heavy. I had considered one until I met one and decided I did not  want to lug that thing around. Tibe, again, intriging and very sharp detail. Thank you.

Alf and Meir, thanks for dropping by. The new toy is the Tamron 70-300 4.5/5.6 Di VC USD lens. There is no additional trick to this shot. The lens is a full frame one and I read about it that it was found to be extremely sharp. Being an engineer, I went further and looked up the MTF plots on the Tamron site and compared them to the Nikon and Sigma similar lenses. I was amazed how much better they are (especially compared to Sigma). Based on those plots, for an APS-C sensor this lens is close to the ideal dream of a lens designer (and even for full frame it is very good).

I did not yet use the lens a lot, but the first impressions confirmed my guess: for my needs it is more than good enough.

You can see the following link on another oppinion that helped me decide:

Just a quick "Thank you" for that information and the link to that brilliant article / review. I can see why you bought that lens, it really is awesome. And I'm seriously going to take a look at it, with a view to buying one myself.

Cheers Tibi
