This image has so very much going for it, the lighthouse and the foreground detail are so very sharp and stand out in contrast to the dramatic but soft sky.  I am curious about your WB, this looks like an image that my have given you a bit of challenge getting the WB just right.  The colours are very dramatic and appeal to my personal taste, however it appears that the water reflection is slightly at odds with the colour of the sky.  Perhaps it is just my monitor.

i think this is your best image yet that i've critiqued.  the composition is REALLY good here. without the clouds, this picture is fantastic, and then you throw the clouds in there and it really completes the image.  i don't really know what those things are to the left of the lighthouse, but i like the line it creates - it compliments the rest of the image well.  a definite 7/7 from me.

look forward to seeing more!

Sincere thanks for stopping by and for your positive feedback. It was a weird night, everything kept changing light, clouds, colours and even the water levels as the tide was coming in swiftly.  I used a ND Grad filter to accentuate the clouds formations. Thanks again Christal.

Many Thanks for your visit and kind words, yeah a lot of the colour is natural, but if I'm honest I don't know quite how much the ND Grad affected the colours and I did fiddle about with it in photo shop, not that I added anything, I just thought it looked a bit too over satuurated as it was and tried to reduce it a bit.

JIM

Sincere thanks for your kind words and positive feedback. You are very astute and accurate in your observations Jim. I did struggle in a way, someone used the word "surreal" to describe the colour and if you seen the original, that is definately what it looked like, the sky was like nothing I've ever seen, but I wasn't sure how much of it was due to the ND Grad and how much was completely natural. I know it was dramatic as I stood and looked at it on that particular evening, but when I processed it, I tried  to get it looking a bit more natural without losing it's impact. I don't think there is anything wrong with your monitor Jim, but bear in mind that the colour of the sand is visible beneath the water may add a tint to the reflection and also it would be the lighter part of the grad.

Cheers Jim!

BOB

Sincere thanks for that very encouraging critique, much appreciated. The line of things on the left of the scene are a long line of interlocking concrete blocks, specially designed to create a groyne, (a sea defence wall) that retains the sand in it''s situation, before these were placed here, the sand had been eroded leaving nothing but bare rock at low tide.

Cheers Bob!

A superb image. I think that Jim Cowan mirrored my thoughts but you have provided an explanation. Best regards and thank you for your recent comments on several of my images.

One of the best I have seen on PN. Awesome job Al. The light color and overall dynamic range is superb. Is this a single shot or a multi shot HDR? Either ways it is awesome.

Dramatic foreground, dramatic background, dramatic horizon.  Stunning colours and tones, with the lighthouse immaculately placed (but not over-stated), knitting everything together. A triumph !

Best wishes, Jim

Epic shot Alf, I don't know where to start - the sky and cloud formation with the rising sun is beautiful along with the reflections in the pools of water. The textures on the sand add to produce a great image.

Very similar to your 'Mersey tide' from a while ago. The same series? Guess all has been said above - nothing much to add without being repetitive. Very good Alf, compliments!

an outstanding image.

great composition, clouds, and reflection. stunning light and exposure.

the cast of green colors in the lower right corner is too much in my opinion, but this is easy to fix anyway.

well done.

Excellent as always, Alf.  I especially like the lieading lines to the lighthouse formed by the jetty and also by the several sand bars coming from the left.    The reflections off the ripples are very effective as is the reflection of the lighthouse itself.  That said, it is the astounding color and detail which put it over the top.

Cheers...

Many Thanks for your visit, kind words and positive feedback. I really did struggle to find the correct WB on this image, and it's something that I will re-visit in the near future to see if Ican improve on it.  It's definately an area that needs to be improved.

Sincere Thanks for your thoughts and comments, very much appreciated. The Image is a single shot processed in Lightroom. I didn't use HDR on this occaision as the sky was already very much defined. I did use a dodge and burn technique to bring out the details of the lighthouse though.

Many Thanks for your kind words and thoughtful feedback. You are right about the green cast, the, rocks are covered in a slimy mossy material  that is green, but I do agree, there seems to be too much emphasis on the saturation of green, but then as I explained earlier, the colour balance escaped me somewhat on this image.

I appreciate your thoughts and invaluable feedback. This is a great location, every tide reveals different rock pools and sand bars and so every photo is unique in it's own way. It is quite local to me, so I return here when I don't have time to go further afield.

The colors are simply fantastic. They seem to cover the whole spectrum. There is a surreal mood in this shot with the textures that remind one of paintings by Max Ernst.

Alf,

We all (I think) pick out photographs that we like for many different reasons, . . . I personally will pick, or pay more attention to Lighthouses almost any time. But this one, . . . not so, I was drawn to it more for the colors of the sky, the sand, and the tones of the reflection, especially in the foreground. Then the "sea wall" or "break" to the left of the Lighthouse and it's reflections, . . . just a fantastic photograph with excellent lighting, shadows, DOF and details in every corner!

A favorite Lighthouse photograph indeed!

Thanks,

Jim j.

It's good to hear from someone who shares my passion for Lighthouses, I find them fascinating and never fail to marvel at thier strength and structure. This one is quite local to me, and I have photographed it on numerous occaisions, strangley I never tire of doing so, for every time is different. I'm really pleased you liked it Jim.
